Great location. water bottles in room next to coffee pot, thought they were complimentary when checked out got charged $5 per bottle of water, called and left message with manager but no return call back.

Rooms above bars don't mix...
We checked in on a Friday night, and the hotel was extremely busy. The room we got was right above a bar and right by the elevators... was not a great night for sleep. Our room was not very well cleaned, stains and stickiness on the counters and toe clippings on the floor... I really expected more from a high-end hotel like the Portola. we asked to change rooms, but were told the hotel was sold out. Didn't get any better with a storm that came in and knocked out the power, internet and TV for most of the hotel. Tried to change rooms on Saturday, but the front desk systems were down due to the storm. Pretty much were stuck with the room till we checked out... the storm was not their fault, but a dirty room above a bar with karaoke, and drunk people crawling down the hallways at night was not cool! This hotel is in a great location in Monterey and I had high hopes for our stay, but future stays in Monterey will be at other establishments unfortunately.

I cannot believe that a large and beautiful property such as this does not have backup generators…… it certainly is not their fault that the power went out, but they should have been prepared, the power goes out at one point or another, everywhere!!

After having paid 300 usd for a night, I had to face a lot of inconvenience. There was no power for the entire night. Had to take stairs with our baggage to the second floor. No compensation was offered for this inconvenience. Additionally, I was charged for the Valet service as well.

A nice hotel in the Monterey area. Walkable to shops and dining options. Unfortunately, there was a power outage for almost 24 hrs. The hotel had no power or hot water, it was cold weather and we had no hot water for the shower or the use of the heating. We then had to repeatedly ask guest services for towels and to get the room cleaned. we had requested room servicing within the required time. Front end Staff were polite and did their best to help. Location is in a great area of town.

The power went out and it was pretty inconvenient to have to take the stairs up and down with my daughter and a stroller. My only complaint is that there should be a generator to keep elevators going for accessibility.
