Mesilla is the epitome of small-town charm, serving as a great location for afternoon shopping and dining, where award winning cafes and restaurants and unique stores surround the town’s historic plaza. Rich in history, culture and heritage, Mesilla is far from quaint. Art galleries, entertaining events, rich history, unique shops, and delicious cuisine are just a few staples that Old Mesilla has to offer.
Visitors often enjoy the quiet ambiance of the Plaza with the peaceful back drop of the San Albino Basilica. Just north of town visitors have even more choices to shop and dine, in what’s known as the town’s Mercado area. The history of the Town boasts everything from the Civil War to Billy the Kid. Visitors can get a brief lesson in history by visiting the Gadsden Museum or by taking a tour with La Morena Walking Tours. For extra fun, tourists may enjoy the multitude of events that occur throughout the year. As Mesilla was once a part of Mexico, the Town is known for its annual Cinco de Mayo and Diez y Seis de Septiembre Fiestas, and the Gadsden Purchase Re-enactment which celebrate significant dates in the Mexican culture. The Town also hosts several events throughout the year including a weekend long celebration of Dia de Los Muertos, Jazz, and Mariachi concerts, in the plaza and the popular lighting of luminarias on Christmas Eve. The Mesilla Valley and nearby Las Cruces features many outdoor recreational activities due to its year-round temperate climate. With an average of 340 days of sunshine and an average high temperature in January of 59 degrees, virtually every week of the year offers great golfing at four local golf courses. There are over 90 city parks and the recreation areas in the adjoining Organ Mountains offer hiking and trail bike riding just minutes away. For other outdoor enthusiasts, winter sports, summertime camping, hunting, horseback riding and fishing are within easy driving distance.
The Las Cruces International Airport, 8 miles west of downtown, provides charter, cargo, and general aviation services. Commercial passenger service is available at the El Paso International Airport, 57 minutes from downtown Las Cruces via Interstate 10.
