About this property

A European Country Getaway ~ 1930s Stone Cottage In Connecticut!

The Windy Top Cottage is an old stone building constructed in 1932 by H. L. Bitter, a wealthy Hartford businessman. This area of Granby was a favorite of the Hartford elite for a place to “summer” in the early part of the 20th Century. The cottage was the place where the domestic staff stayed when the family was staying in North Granby. With an elevation of 970, the home once had views of Hartford. Today after lots of trees grew, views are still just a minute away and the cool breezes remain!

Dawn and Ken have refreshed the interior with newly sanded "pumpkin pine" floors and warm, decorator wall tones. There is over 1000 of living space. The bath fixtures are original from the 30s and the huge stone fireplace has propane fired gas logs for cozy winter nights. The large first-floor great room also has a small coffee service, there is NO KITCHEN and we are NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN.

The second-floor bedrooms are spacious and yet very cozy. The home has an English Country House feel with all furnishings provided by Dawn’s painted furniture business: A Girl With A Paintbrush. Flower boxes adorn several windows that overlook an herb and flower garden. The property is accessed by original brick walkways and lead to the private entry door.

Guests will be able to use the entire building with the exception of the garage bays for their private use. A private exterior patio is located out the back door with old patio chairs, benches, and a firepit.

Amenities include freshly laundered soft cotton bedding and towels, bathrobes, hypoallergenic or goose down pillows, cozy sofas, and chairs, comfortable carpeting, and rugs. The linen closet has an ample supply of bar soaps, shampoos, a hair dryer and a first aid box.

The spaces are accessorized with old framed artwork, mirrors, clocks and folk art. We offer a quiet, relaxing experience without TV, with old books, old magazines, and games to enjoy a special time with friends or loved ones. Excellent wireless service to keep tabs on the world if you need to.

The coffee service provides a toaster oven, a French press and a Keurig single cup coffee maker with fresh cream and organic sugar.

Our goal is to greet you and then leave you to enjoy the cottage and all the surrounding amenities and beauty at your leisure. We live in the main house so we are always available by text or cell phone.

The beds are a king sized and a standard full sized. The south bedroom offers an antique double. We provide a complete list of emergency info in the unlikely event that you would need it.

The exterior patio out the rear door is covered by an awning. The firepit makes great campfires for grilling hot dogs and making S'Mores.

Granby is an "upscale", small suburban Hartford community with tons of nearby amenities and located in an area known for working dairy farms, equestrian centers, apple orchards and farm wineries Our beautiful community also offers self-serve farm stands, homemade ice cream stores, art galleries, country libraries as well as gourmand evening dining establishments.
The Windy Top Cottage is located in an area with breathtaking views of Massachusetts (walk just a little more than a half mile to the amazing Mary Edwards Property) and a 5-minute drive from the best waterfalls in Connecticut! We are surrounded by thousands of acres of hiking/walking trails, a game refuge and several state forests. Back-in-time but with full amenities
This was a quick overnight for us, visiting family nearby and out to dinner, and still it felt like we'd escaped to a different time and place, yet with full amenities. Amazing. I wanted to stay up all night reading by the fire but forced myself to bed, to discover the king size i'd only had time to glance at was a luxurious heated nest. Morning by the fire, luxurious coffee and tea options, served breakfast (for extra charge- worth it!) and i was ready to face the drive home. I look forward to booking again when we can stay longer and explore nearby hikes. What a delight. Owners very responsive and helpful but plenty of privacy. Read what they send, ask questions/generally stay in touch and you'll be good.

Peaceful Retreat
We thoroughly enjoyed our recent stay at Windy Top Cottage. The owners were responsive and kind and answered any questions we had. The cottage was like something out of a storybook. It was quaint, peaceful, and welcoming. The beds were very comfy. We loved the old board games, books, and cozy fireplace. The decor had so many special touches. You can tell Ken and Dawn take pride in their home and enjoy sharing it with others. We would definitely considering visiting again!

Amazing Cozy Cottage!
Everything about our stay was fabulous- from leaving the lights on to welcome us with a personalized sign to excellent coffee service and a picnic lunch! Our hosts were so accommodating and so very welcoming. The location was great for us to drive to travel to neighboring cities, and relaxing at the cottage was a great way to end our days of exploring. The master bed was so comfortable (and refreshing after a long day of driving when our flight got cancelled!). There was excellent wi-fi also so we could still connect when we needed to, we would recommend Windy Top to anyone!!

This was the best thing I’ve done in a long time. The kuels are very attentive to the needs of their guests and very helpful. It’s a great quiet place to relax and unwind from the stress of life. The proximity to hiking is incredibly close to the cottage. If my travels allow me, I will have to come back here.

Quaint New England Cottage
Situated in a rural area of Connecticut, this English-syle cottage is a gem. Furnishings and wall art were thoughtfully displayed through-out. The gas-fired fireplace added a warm (needed that spring week-end!) glow. Enjoyed thoroughly.

Hosts Thought of Every Detail
This was the perfect one-night getaway for two busy moms. The decor was cozy and inviting, and the fireplace and remote-controlled candles gave the cottage a wonderful ambiance. The beds we comfortable too. Having a refrigerator and some appliances was very handy despite there being no kitchen. We will definitely be back!

Best VRBO Experience to date!
Windy top cottage was the perfect destination for our girls trip / birthday weekend. We had such an amazing time enjoying the quiet mornings outside, disconnected evenings in the cottage, and the beautiful town of Granby and surrounding areas. The cottage is even cuter than the pictures show (which is already so cute and what drew us in in the first place). There was even a welcome sign with our names on it when we arrived! It is obvious that so much time, thought and love went into creating this beautiful space and the details have not gone unnoticed. From the amazing room service offered, to the most extensive collection of bathroom essentials and local recommendations, Windy top surpassed our expectations and was our favorite stay to date. If you are a fan of high tea you cannot miss Dawn’s beautifully curated “picnic lunch for 2”. It was prepared and ready for us as soon as we arrived with the most gorgeous table setting and she so graciously clears everything away so quickly we barely knew she was there, it was like magic! Thank you so much to Dawn and Ken who made us feel so welcome from the second we arrived to the minute we left. If you’re thinking about booking windy top cottage let this be your push to just do it!

A Quintessential Cottage
The place was exactly as it was on the advert. A quintessential cottage in the middle of greenery. Attention to details was impeccable. I loved most having a jar of honey in addition to the usual white sugar, Splenda and Equal as sweeteners; box of tissues on all bedside tables; supply of plush 2-ply toilet paper instead of a single ply … these minute details were greatly appreciated! We had a grand time! It was a cozy, quiet and comfortable respite from our daily concrete jungle routine. Many thanks, Dawn & Ken.

Sweet
Upon first sight of the cottage was like stepping into a fairy tale back in time, Hansel and Gretel. The outside was so pretty, surrounded by trees and flowers and a chipmunk was there to greet us. But stepping inside was amazing, tastefully decorated and many amenities at your fingertips. A plate of cookies with real whipped strawberries 🍓 frost.. delicious. Ken and Dawn were friendly and accommodating. Would absolutely recommend. A.M.D

We thought we were back in Great Britain
This was a very nicely appointed and decorated stone cottage reminiscent of ones we had stayed in while touring the British Isles. While there was no running water or bathroom on the first floor there was a full size refrigerator and the hosts had provided two pitchers of water for our coffee and tea. And there were lots of flavors to choose from. There also were apothecary jars of candy. Terry robes and slippers were also provided. The cottage is part of the detached garage next to the house where the owners live. When we drove in Ken came out to greet us and had all our names on a welcoming slate at the door. But we felt very independent in our cottage and did not see him again. The whole property is very lovely. It was the last night of a trip with a lot of driving and we had driven almost 500 miles that day so we didn't have much of a chance to enjoy our cottage or the area. I would like to come back again and explore this more rural, hilly, and wooded area of Connecticut.

Charming and Thoughtful
Upon arrival we were greeted with a fire in the fireplace, a custom welcome sign, and soft music playing. The ambiance was adorable and the decor was to die for, and the cottage was spotless! The sleeping accommodations were super comfortable. The reasons I didn’t give a 5 star rating: I would have liked a less sheer curtain in the bathroom. I realize we are in the middle of the woods, but for those of us visiting from suburbia or the city, we can be a little shy about using the restroom and showering in front of sheer window coverings. Maybe it’s a “me problem”. The shower was also very dark once the shower curtain was closed. My 5’11’ husband hit his head on the living room chandelier several times when standing up from the couch, and the steep stairs may not be suitable for elderly guests. Other than that, there was so much attention to detail. It felt very welcoming and was beyond adorable! The guide to the city was very helpful. This is definitely the kind of hospitality any VRBO should exhibit!

Ken and Dawn were amazing, accommodating hosts who really went the extra mile for us with their communication and hospitality. The house was perfectly quiet, clean, and extra-cozy with the fire already going for us and the beds warmed via special mattress covers. We were delighted by everything, and we were sorry to leave.
