We booked the Merit Iguazú for a 2-night stay in Nov. 2024. The hotel was rated 8,6 on Expedia. Our checkin went alright. We got to our room and first thing that struck us was the bad smell. The window was open despite it being a 30C temperature, humid day. I went to close it, thinking maybe the smell came from outside and noticed that the large sliding window did not lock. The mechanism was broken. The whole room looked worn out and in need of renovations. But our concern was that there was a balcony going from room to room. Someone could easily go out his room’s window, walk to our room and get. It was the same as leaving the front door unlocked! We went back to the front desk, explained the situation and they gave us another room. Surprise! The second room had the same issue with the sliding window not locking. We went back and insisted on getting a room with a sliding window that locked. They sent someone to check on rooms and offered us a third room. We got to it with our suitcases and were very disappointed to see that the sliding window did not lock anymore than it did in the first two rooms. Even worse, the sheets were dirty/stained. At that point, we had had enough and figured we would just find another hotel. We went back to the front desk and explained the situation to get a refund. We waited over an hour but never got a refund to this day. We left and check in at Hotel Saint George. Same Expedia rating but so much better. Avoid the Merit Iguazú at all costs.
