This unique apartment is located in a historic building designed by the renowned architect C.M.B. (Casper) van den Beld, who won a design competition in 1931 for the construction of this extraordinary building, sponsored by Heineken. The rich history of the building is highlighted by the stunning stained-glass windows in the stairwell, which depict various modes of transportation over time and include the coats of arms of Brabant, Tilburg, and the Netherlands.

The building was designed in the signature style of "De Stijl," featuring clean lines and bright primary colors, adding a unique artistic dimension to your stay.

Hotel Central Background

In 1931, the monumental Hotel Central was built opposite the station in Tilburg in Art Deco style by architect Casper Melchior Balthasar van den Beld. Before that time, this location housed the café-restaurant Albert Janssen.

During World War I, Theo van Doesburg was stationed as a sergeant-postman on the Regte Heide between Tilburg and the Belgian border. The café-restaurant of Albert Janssen served as a meeting place for Van Doesburg and his artistic friends who organized sensational Dadaist 'soirees intimes' there. It was also here that preliminary ideas were formulated for a new magazine (De Stijl) which would mark the beginning of the art movement De Stijl, founded in 1917 in Leiden. The contours of this avant-garde movement were sketched in pencil at this location on Spoorlaan in Tilburg.

As a tribute to the spirit of innovation of that time, during the renovation of Hotel Central in 2023, it was decided to name each of the 21 rooms after an artist associated with De Stijl or a Dada artist.

Theo van Doesburg, who wrote Dadaist poems under the pseudonym I.K. Bonset, represents a convergence of De Stijl and the experimental and absurdist Dadaism. Both art movements, which were a response to World War I and the new era that began with the 20th century, were diametrically opposed to each other.

Each of the 21 rooms in Hotel Central has received unique wall coverings featuring specific accents and/or quotes from the respective artist, writer, or architect.

Room 18 Nelly van Doesburg Room (The Hague 1899 – Meudon 1975) In the summer of 1920, Theo van Doesburg met his future third wife Nelly van Moorsel, who was a pianist and dancer. Over the years, the couple traveled across Europe, with Van Doesburg giving lectures on new developments in art and Nelly performing as a pianist under the name Pétro van Doesburg. A pianist's room naturally features music, and the sheet music 'Marcia Muziale per un Coccodrillo' by Vittorio Rieti, a composer she often performed, adorns one of the walls of room 18. The crocodile celebrated in the music innocently appears in the form of a printed crocodile skin on two opposing walls. A grand piano is lowered by strings, and at the entrance, a quote from Nelly can be read. After Theo van Doesburg's death in 1931, the 'indispensable Dadaist musical instrument of Europe,' as Nelly was once called in artistic circles, devoted herself from their studio house in Meudon to managing Van Doesburg's estate, supported administratively by Lena Milius, Van Doesburg's second wife. On this third floor, room 20 is named after Lena Milius.

With the nearby train station, you can be in Amsterdam in 60 minutes, Rotterdam in 35 minutes, and Eindhoven in just 20 minutes. Tilburg University is also easily accessible by train or bus in just 5 minutes. Of course, cycling is always a quick and typically Dutch option!
