Afton Station Cottage -Beautifully Renovated Blue Ridge Scenic Historic Setting

Our house is nestled on the eastern slope of Afton Mountain just below Rockfish Gap in the northern tip of Historic Nelson County on the “Sunrise Side of the Blue Ridge” It’s just 3-minutes away from where the Blue Ridge Parkway meets the Skyline Drive and 4-minutes to the southern gatehouse of the Shenandoah National Park. Hiking, skiing, golf, biking, and sightseeing; the area calls to the outdoor enthusiast.
If history is your thing you're fortunate that we have that too! But if you are the type that prefers a quiet spot with a good book that's possible too; the house has two porches and outside of the occasional train rumbling past it's pretty quiet. There are music and performance venues in the nearby communities of Crozet, Waynesboro, Charlottesville, and Staunton. In recent years Nelson County has enjoyed a renaissance of sorts in the age-old crafts of brewing, distilling, and viticulture; Nelson County's popular Brew Ridge Trail begins just three miles down the road where you can tour numerous breweries, cideries, vineyards, and a distillery or two.
One section of our property was once the site of the freight station for the original Blue Ridge Railway which sits alongside the recently renovated Claudius Crozet Blue Ridge Trail. This Rails-To-Trails addition will include Crozet’s 4300-foot-long tunnel dug 500 feet below Afton Mountain during the 1850s. It was one of the longest tunnels ever built in its day and the first tunnel ever dug simultaneously from both sides. The tunnel/trail opened to visitors in the fall of 2020 to rave reviews.
The house (our first home) is a simple wood-framed 2-story cottage with about 1200 sq feet of living space. We don’t know how old it is but 25 years ago we met a woman who told us she was born in the house in 1911; we don't think it's much older than that. Much of the house has been modernized and renovated. The upstairs bedrooms are small by modern standards and have sloped ceilings and the stairway was built for a time when people were shorter so you folks over 6’2 should watch your noggins. There are two bedrooms upstairs; one with a queen and the second bedroom has two twin beds. There is a modern bathroom with a shower and a small office nook.
On the first floor, you will find a well-equipped kitchen, dining, and living area in an open and well-lit floor plan. The original living room was converted to a first-floor bedroom with a king bed in 2022.
Just two steps from the new primary bedroom and off the family room you will find a small full bath with a tub/shower.
The cozy open front porch faces east onto a small shaded front lawn. There are views to the east and south that open up in the winter. It is the best place to escape the heat of the day or to enjoy early morning coffee.
The fully enclosed back porch was fully insulated in 2022 to make it more comfortable. It is not heated or air-conditioned as of yet since we want to see how it responds to the insulation.
The trailhead for the Blue Ridge Tunnel, a major local attraction, adjoins our property at one corner. The eastern access trail is a nearly level hard-pack surface 1/2 mile to the tunnel entrance. The tunnel, which opened for train traffic in 1858, is 4300 feet long and was dug simultaneously from east and west.

We’re located just 25 miles west of Charlottesville, UVA, and Monticello, 4 minutes from I-64 exit 99 or 10 minutes from I-64 exit 107. Waynesboro is 10 minutes to the west. It’s just a 15-minute walk to the Appalachian Trail. Wintergreen's Valley section, Stoney Creek is a 15-minute drive down the Rockfish Valley. The skiing area on the mountain is another 15 minutes beyond that or, if weather permits during non-freezing temperatures, you can shave some time by traveling the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway route to the mountain section. Enjoy everything the Blue Ridge Mountains have to offer.
The more information you provide in the booking inquiry the better we will be able to serve you.
Thanks for looking.
During your stay at this holiday home, you'll be within walking distance of Crozet Tunnel. Free WiFi and a kitchen are available in the holiday home.

Awesome property on Afton Mountain
Everything about our stay at Afton Cottage was exceptional. Tom and Jackie are excellent hosts! All our questions were answered quickly and they gave great suggestions on wineries to try. The cottage itself was super cute and comfortable. The location was very convenient to the Afton wineries and breweries. We were so happy we booked Afton Cottage. We will be back!

Beautiful cottage in the woods.
Stayed in the cottage for a family wedding in the area. Beautiful scenery and close to numerous wineries and activities, but the cottage itself is out in the country. Easy drive to Charlottesville as well. Would stay there again.

Great location, home, and communication
We really enjoyed our stay at the Afton Station Cottage. We stayed a total of 8 nights, and everything was great. Perfect location if you want to check out the wine/breweries in the area or Skyline/Blue Ridge Parkway. We did a little of both. The owners had recommendations and supplied pamphlets for the area. Our stay started with a storm and the loss of power on the second day. The owner had a generator already there and had everything going when we returned from our excursions for that day. He stayed in contact with us and the electric company during this time to keep us updated. We could not have asked for more. We are already planning on coming back to finish everything we didn't have time to do. We would definitely stay here again.

Lovely cottage for multiple day stay
Pay close attention to cottage directions by very friendly onsite owner. The road has some twisty turns - Not bad if you arrive during the day, but we arrived when it was late and very dark... The cottage has been updated beautifully. Our adult, active family loved the time we had here. The surroundings are great for hiking or just reading a book. We won't hesitate to stay there again.

2 grandparents and 2 grandsons found the Afton Cottage to be comfortable and convenient. We enjoyed breakfast with bluebirds and bunnies, bikes and hikes on the tunnel trail, drives and hikes in the SNP, and a family reunion in nearby Charlottesville. The house was very comfortable and well appointed.

Afton Cottage
The cottage is tucked away in the mountain but is right by Rt 6 near Rt 250. We came with our adult children for some relaxation. The cottage was very well equipped and we loved the layout. I spent most mornings on the screened porch enjoying my coffee and the bird song. We had planned to do some hiking, since its near the Blue Ridge Tunnel and the Shenandoah Park but temperatures were in the 90s. We did hike down to the tunnel once. We've already booked for April 2025 so we can hopefully hike in cooler weather. Doesn't hurt that Veritas winery is 10 minutes down the road. There are other wineries and breweries in the area and we alternated visiting them in the afternoon and playing games in the evening.

Perfect place for a Blue Ridge hiking and VA wine country stay!
We loved Afton Station Cottage! We were looking for a nice place to stay for our trip to the Blue Ridge for hiking and sightseeing, and located in the Charlottesville-Shenandoah Valley wine country. We couldn’t have found a more homey and comfortable place. Communication with our hosts easy and convenient throughout our stay. Pre-check in information was perfect. Our hosts also gave us some great information about the area, including suggestions for places to see and visit. We enjoyed one of the best VRBO stays we’ve had. We’ll be back!

Excellent location
We were attending a wedding at nearby Hazy Mountain Winery. This location was so close to many wineries and breweries, as well as “back yard” access to the Blue Ridge Tunnel for a great morning hike. We enjoyed the fire pit every night and college football games on Saturday afternoon. The only downside was the upstairs bedrooms were warm even with the air conditioner running. Fans would have been nice. It was unusually hot while we were there though. We want to return and explore the area more. Stunning fall destination.

We loved our stay here at this cozy cottage in Afton. It's in a quiet neighborhood with occasional train passing by. Great place to relax and enjoy your beautiful surroundings. Waynesboro is close by with all your shopping needs. Attractions are a short day trip away. The cottage has everything you'll need to make your stay comfortable. We loved the inside atmosphere and decor. The beds were comfortable and clean. The bathrooms and kitchen were clean, functional, and beautiful. Everything is labeled and easy to find/use. Perfect mountain cottage!
We so enjoyed our stay at this adorable cottage! It has the perfect balance of modern conveniences without losing the charm of its age and history. A beautiful modern, well stocked kitchen with top of the line appliances, updated bathrooms, and comfortable beds provide the basics for daily living. But, the personality of a vintage cottage still remains. It felt so homey and we loved relaxing in the enclosed porch soaking in the beauty of the mountains. We were there for the Celebration of Life for a family member, and the coziness of the cottage provided each of us the comfort and opportunity to quietly reflect. Tom and Jackie were the perfect hosts. They provided all the information we needed for our stay and were always timely in answering our questions. If we could give 10 stars we would! Thank you, Tom and Jackie.

History, Wineries and Breweries Great time
The Property was better than advertised! My Wife and I stayed for a long weekend with my Dad and we all commented how nice the house was. The House was spotless and had everything we needed to cook a couple of dinners. We went to both Montpelier and Monticello and through in a few Wineries, Breweries and Distilleries to round it out....what a good time! The Owner Tom is a great guy and was very responsive to any question we had. Looking forward to another stay so we can take a walk through the Blue Ridge Tunnel, the parking for tunnel is directly adjacent to the back of the property! I highly recommend staying here...don't miss it!
