About this property

Unique Historic Fishing Lodge on the River Spey

The Location:
Pityoulish House sits in an imposing position at the bend of the legendary river Spey, it’s name derived from ancient Pictish and meaning bright, beautiful gathering place or simply the bright place. Its located in the Cairngorms National Park, surrounded by a majestic landscape of mountains and rolling hills.

Pityoulish House is approximately 7 minutes drive from Aviemore, a vibrant, all year round outdoor adventure town.

No fewer that 13 golf courses can be reached by driving less than an hour. Pityoulish House also sits perfectly nearby the the Speyside Malt Whiskey Trail with dozens of distilleries reachable from the house. There is water sport, biking and hiking nearby to name just a few of the activities and Munros including the magical Ben Macdui is within easy reach of the house. If you prefer a more private experience, by all means take the paddle boards onto loch Pityoulish or let us know and we can arrange a ghillie to take the short walk down to 2 miles of private river where you can find trout and salmon or just get lost in the meditative quality of the Spey cast made famous by this magnificent river.

The Space:
Immerse yourself in the understated luxury and comfort of Pityoulish House; a beautiful fishing lodge, once belonging to the Duke of Gordon. The Lodge is designed to accommodate up to 16 with ease. Pityoulish House was a finalist on Scotland’s Home of the Year 2024 and the winner for the Highlands region and the house features in the exquisite book by Banjo Beale; “A Place in Scotland”
Here's what makes your stay unforgettable:

Sleep as described in “I am” by William Blake: There are eight elegant bedrooms, each with a view of the Scottish Highlands, they are more than just places to sleep, they are quiet retreats with picture window, without light pollution or noise, they are all quite magical. Each room has linen bedding and dedicated en suite bathrooms with heated floors and powerful showers, two have baths with views.

Gathering places: Pityoulish House offers communal areas tailored to your disposition at any given time. Connect and chill in the kitchen with its warm inviting fire and island to gather around, or for more formality, have the perfect meal in the dining/meeting room with a custom made elm table which seats 16 overlooking the Spey. The living room provides a place to lounge and relax while the drawing room creates a quiet place to sip a drink around the fire. For those that prefer being in the dark embrace of nature and magic, there is the apothecary, full of tinctures, fragrant remedies and fragments of the amazing nature that surrounds the house.

Magical Outdoor Spaces: In the evening discover the fire pit in the herb garden or walk the spiral in the sunken garden, leave an offering to mother nature in the centre and maybe reconnect with the ground and our planet. There is no better way to spend the evening than to grab a lantern and take the short walk down to the river’s bank as dusk settles to sit at the beach and watch the river flow by as it has for millennia.

Take a walk into our private forest amount Scots pine and ancient oaks you'll happen upon our hand woven tree net where grown up can meditate and rest and little ones can bounce to their heart's content.

All information is available upon checkin and guests will be provided with a number to obtain help should it be required, we have worked to make sure the needs of guests are met and someone will be available in case of any questions.

Highland home
A lovely, well appointed home with comfy beds and plenty of towels etc. Seating was a bit uncomfortable in some rooms, and the heating was a challenge at first. That being said, the owners were readily available and answered all questions. I feel it would be a good idea to have instructions somewhere in the house regarding certain things to make it easier, not only on people renting, but for the owners as well. We did enjoy our time there, it's a lovely area.
