Good Value Stay in Hanoi

Pros: The Posh Hotel doesn't quite live up to its name, but then it is a cheap hotel. The staff were its best asset, always cheerful and anxious to help.
Cons: The hotel needs some maintenance.
Location: When you've found your way about, there are some good places to visit and eat near the hotel. The Hoan Kiem lake is a very nice area.
I knew nothing about Hanoi when booking so proximity to the "old town" for me would generally mean the most charming part of the city which is not quite the case in Hanoi. The old town is pretty chaotic, dirty, run-down - but teeming with life and the cheering sight of lots of young, happy families. We had 2 excellent excursions to Halong Bay and the Bai Dinh Pagoda organised by Get Up and Go Vietnam.
