Lovely 4* cottage in quiet rural location, close to Henley-on-Thames & Marlow

OLD ROSE COTTAGE is a 4 star AA rated grade II listed brick & flint holiday cottage located in the picturesque village of Turville (home to the TV serie The Vicar of Dibley) in the in the Hambleden Valley, in the heart of Chiltern Hills. Designated as an "Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty" the Hambleden Valley has some of the most spectacular and characteristic Chiltern scenery: high ridges, beech woods, sweeping dry chalk valleys yet it is only 20 miles from Oxford and 25 miles from Heathrow.
This unspoilt, beautiful location offers a wide range of attractions to suit the whole family: from the finest walking and cycling paths in the Chilterns to boat trips and picnics along the nearby river Thames, visits to grand stately homes and shopping in the pretty riverside market towns of Marlow and Henley.
Old Rose Cottage dates back to the 16th century and it has been sympathetically renovated to provide all comforts while preserving its character. It's open all year and provides self-catering accommodation for up to 4 people in two bedrooms (a double and a twin). We hold a 4-star rating with the AA and we are assessed every year.
The cottage is arranged over two floors: upstairs you will find two double bedrooms (a double and a twin) and on ground floor there are a lovely sitting room, a spacious kitchen/diner and the bathroom.
The two double bedrooms and stairway have original oak beams, the oak cottage style kitchen/dining room is spacious and fully equipped and the sitting room has a magnificent inglenook fireplace with log burner for cosy winter evenings in.
Facilities:
- TV with freeview
- Wi-fi
- DVD player
- dishwasher
- washing machine
- hob, oven, microwave, fridge freezer and abundance of crockery and pans
- nearby private garden - detached from the property, just a few meters away
- on-street parking for one car.
LOCATION
The tiny remote village of Turville is actually one of the most popular film and TV location of the country: beautiful St Mary is the church featured in The Vicar of Dibley, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was based at the Cobstone Windmill, which overlooks the village, and Midsomer Murders is a regular visitor here at the village, to name just a few. And it is easy to see why. Nestled in the Chiltern Hills, the postcard perfect village will give you the impression of stepping back in time with its tranquility and its delightful cottages, most of which date back to the 16th century. The breathtaking countryside of the Chilterns is without a doubt the best attraction of the area, and it is itself well worth a stay.
The best ways to explore the surroundings is walking or cycling, and the Ridgeway, The Thames Path and the Chiltern Way are here for you to do just that. Hamlets and country villages are scattered around waiting to be discovered (Swycombe, Ewelme, Fingest and Hambleden are just a few examples), with antique churches and traditional pubs. Or you can relax in front of the log burner and soak up the peaceful atmosphere of Turville.
Our beloved local pub - The Bull & Butcher - is a short stroll from the cottage, and they serve lovely food.

But there is more to keep you and your family entertained, like canoeing and cruising along the River Thames, golfing at one of the many golf courses nearby or shopping and eating out. Bicester Outlet Village is only a 20 min drive away from Turville and nearby Henley, Marlow, Wallingford, Thame and Goring offer plenty of shops and boutiques, and a superb choice of relaxing cafes, characterful pubs and restaurants catering for every taste and budget.
And if it is culture you crave, Oxford is about 20 miles away, and in Henley, Marlow, Thame and Wallingford you will find theaters, art galleries, museums and so many festivals and events you will be spoilt for choice!
Two of our favourite destinations are The River and Rowing Museum in Henley and The Roald Dahl Museum in Great Missenden; a must for families and children.

Or you can go explore National Trust properties nearby: Hughenden Manor, home to Queen Victoria prime minister Benjamin Disraeli; Cliveden estate overlooking the Thames; Greys Court, a Tudor house with an interesting history; West Wycombe village, a Chilterns village with cottages and inns dating from the 16th to 18th centuries to name a few.

TRANSPORT
Turville is in rural location and there's no public transport: own car is advised. There is allocated on-street parking for one car next to the cottage.
Nearest train stations are in Henley-on-Thames, High Wycombe (both are approximately 8 miles away) and Reading (15 miles away).
All above train stations are served by a taxi rank and/or a cab office, and many local driver/taxi services serve the area.
During your stay at this cottage, you'll be close to Hundred Hills. The cottage includes amenities such as free WiFi and a kitchen.
  • The cottage offers a kitchen, a washing machine and a fireplace
  • Free WiFi
  • 10 minutes by car from Chiltern Hills and 10 minutes from Skirmish Wycombe

We had a lovely time. The cottage was just as we thought, very beautiful, very clean and was well equipped. The location was really good, there are plenty of walks nearby and the countryside is glorious. Lea and Dave

Smmer Stay in Turville
What a delight to stay in the lovely historic little cottage, in the town where parts of The Vicar of Dibley” and “Midsummer Murders” tv series were filmed. Out host was wonderful and the locals at the historic Bull and Butcher Pub were so welcoming, right from our arrival. Thoroughly recommended. Beware, your mobile phone will almost certainly not work in and around Turville, so be prepared to use emails for comms, or drive a few km until you get reception!

Sweet cottage, fabulous location
A sweet little cottage in a wonderful location for cycling and walking. Bird-lovers would enjoy the number of red kites flying about. The local pub was only a few minutes walk away. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The owner was very accommodating and easy to communicate with. Definitely would recommend to others.

One for Vicar of Dibley fans!
We had a lovely relaxing "Vicar of Dibley" weekend taking in the sights of the village and watching the entire boxset of the tv series... the cottage had everything we needed for a home away from home stay.

Sisters trip
Beautiful cottage in a stunning location. Plenty of crockery and utensils. Twin beds were very comfortable.the double bed is quite a hard mattress. We loved our stay. I would say that the cottage would benefit from a little TLC, for example the shelf above the sink and the area where the tray is look untidy and a bit dirty. But we had a great stay and I would certainly stay there again.

Tucked away country bliss
Wonderful, simply wonderful. Quintessentially English village located in beatiful rural area, yet close enough to everything. Kate (the owner) was so welcoming and the cottage has everything you could wish for. We visited Oxford, London, Henley on Thames, Reading and Basingstoke and still had time to enjoy the cottage and its surroundings. Would love to come again to visit. And would definitely recommend.

Beautiful village - lots of good walks and located to be handy for Henley, Marlow, Wycombe, Wallingford, etc.. The little lane past the front of the cottage can be busy with walkers, cyclists, horse riders and at school times, but otherwise a lovely, peaceful little bolt hole. We would definitely return.

Excellent location, basic accommodation
We enjoyed walking, a visit to London and local National Trust locations. Found the heating controls confusing, had to use a lot of logs as it was cold for the time of year. Kitchen equipment a bit basic for 4 star rating.

Happy five nights in Turville village.
The cottage was fine. Just a pity that the garden is so far from the house. The description did warn, but it was a pity. Walls are paper thin to next door neighbours (could hear them snoring!) but the area is beautiful and with a garden at the back door, it would have been wonderful. Still, was pretty good, with friendly, helpful neighbours, excellent bedding/ towels and a brilliant butter dish! Wood burning stove worked well and kitchen is well equipped (although fridge needed mopping out as had been left too low temp.)

A cottage for Garsington Opera
The cottage is charming, clean and well equipped. It is situated in a truly lovely little Chiltern Village. We were there for a visit to the nearby Garsington Opera Festival, so it was only a short stay. Particularly to be recommended is the local pub with wonderful pies.

Beautiful location, lovely cottage
All very nice, our second time. Well equipped kitchen and plentiful hot water for the bath, which is always nice. Enjoyed the log burner after trial and error. I found the bed in the main bedroom a bit hard but I am 'getting on' so it is probably just me. Another strange thing. I couldn't find the router, which I was going to plug into so that I could do some work while there. I had the same problem last time but had forgotten, a mystery. Anyway, it was, in a way, nice to have an excuse not to work! We felt at home. The place was immacutely clean. All very lovely.

Cosy Cottage for Short Break
Had three nights here for a short birthday holiday. Very quiet and peaceful, with beautiful surroundings. It was nice to be able to walk out from the property onto the neighbouring hills. In many ways a great location - no city bustle in the village, but a short distance from nice country houses, the shopping village at Bicester, Henley, Marlow and Oxford. The cottage was comfortable, we slept well and we enjoyed the log fire. The hob was fine - although one burner didn't seem to work - and we didn't use the oven. Although early October it was a bit chilly, but we easily got the place nice and warm. However facilities are limited by the location - no 'phone signal and the TV was not really watchable. The pub is OK, but as the village has no street lights there is not much else you can do - although the upside is being able to see the stars. So great for a short break - I'm not sure we would have been so happy staying for a week - but the tranquility would suit many, I am sure.

Uncomfortable place to stay & couldn’t wait to go back home.
Very old cottage & could be comfortable upstairs & down. Upstairs was ok but downstairs the lounge is awful. The settee & chairs smelled very musty & so uncomfortable to sit in - it was ikea type settee full size which smelled like been left out in the rain for weeks - the lounge itself felt dirty. The floor covering in the kitchen was folded in places rumpled & unsafe to walk on. We couldn’t wait to go home & I would never ever recommend this property.

Gorgeous cottage in the Chilton Hills
This was a lovely little cottage in the tiny village of Turville. It was a cosy, cute place to spend our time during a winter snowy weekend. The pub is the only 'shop‘ in town. Groceries are a few villages away. Two small bedrooms upstairs, with comfy beds & reasonable storage. Small living room with seating for 4. Wood burning stove in open fireplace for atmosphere, as central heating in all the rooms kept us warm. Well equiped kitchen even though small. Lots of walking in all directions & great scenery when driving around.

Wonderful walks on the doorstep of this pretty little cottage. Several country pubs within easy walking distance and lots of interesting places to visit nearby. We spent a day at the Henley Literary Festival and enjoyed a beautiful riverside walk along the Thames Path.

Very cosy cottage, in tranquil village nestling in pristine countryside.
The cottage is very snug and cosy. The log burner is great and the pub in the village is about 100m and also has a nice ambiance, a roaring fire and good food. The village Nestle's in the valley surrounded by fields and forrest making for great walks up part the windmill or circling by other village pubs... If you want to just relax by the fire, enjoy good pub food and drink or go cycling and walking this is a treat you'll love... We had a lovely time. The village is within easy reach of the M40, Henley, High Wickham and several My properties too. Enjoy your stay
