I spent one night here on a work trip and the only thing I'm sorry about is that it was just one night. I will definitely be back. The room came as a pleasant surprise. It is very spacious, with a basic kitchenette and a comfortable sitting area for watching TV. It is sparkling clean, with quality white cotton bed linen and a mosquito net.
The location is perfect within easy walking distance to the 24 hour Engen shop and a few good restaurants and breakfast spots across the road.
John is a wonderful host who responded to messages timeously, and understands hospitality. When I explained that I had a bakkie load of photography equipment with me, and no energy to schlepp it upstairs to my room, he generously offered the use of his personal garage. Thank you, John! Hospitality like this makes such a difference.
This was the perfect way for our family to spend a long weekend in a home-away-from-home apartment. The rainy weather kept us indoors for most of the time, but the good wifi and indoor-braai meant that we could still enjoy the time.
We had to ask for some extra towels and toiletries, but other than that, we were very happy and will definitely recommend Hornbill to family and friends.
We only stayed one night, as planned. Hornbill House is a little away from Hermanus town center but it's easy to park the car, safe, close to shopping. It has everything to cook as well as being a confortable accommodation. We would really recommend it.
We came back to SA after a big tour in the summer because we wanted to spend more time around Hermanus, to that end were on a bit of a budget this time. Hornbill House was really well priced, in a brilliant location for getting around and gave us the freedom of some self catering. The room was really cosy, the bathroom a bit rustic, but roomy and perfectly adequate. We had a problem with the water a few days after we arrived, it wasn´t the fault of the owner, the local reservoir had been allowed to dry out (!!!) anyway all efforts were made to look after us and all the staff went above and beyond to make the rest of our stay wonderful. I would certainly go back if I was taking the same sort of trip.
Arrived to a very warm welcome. We were in the garden apartment with secure gated parking. Greeted with a complimentary bottle of wine from Hornbill winery - outside braai area with dining table, cosy living room, kitchen provided everything you need (including tea/coffee & milk which was much appreciated after a long drive) - fantastic shower & bedroom. Close to shops and a 5 min drive to the sea front where we were fortunate to witness the whales. Wished we had booked a longer stay.
Beside the stairs which was killer for to carrying up 2 heavy luggages, it was the stairs to heaven. The decorations were beautifully done up. And it was near to a mall.will definitely stay there again.
Great place to stay. Large arts studio that has become a 2 bedroom apt. Great decortions. Food and shopping nearby.
I would stay here again.

The reception emailed in advance of our arrival requesting an approximate time of arrival as the reception is not manned 24/7. We were given directions and when we arrived and formalities over, we were shown to the room and facilities. The kitchen is well provisioned for self catering and the room is quite large. Neat and clean.
Lovely quirky non commercial place to stay. If you're bored of big hotels, check this great little place out. Lots of local art and crafts, courtyard parking and felt very safe. A nice change to be self catering after Cape Town. Whales and Hermanus are amazing. Check out local markets too. We loved it and the owners wine nice too.
This place has lots of character, very clean and homely!
We would definitely stay here again.
The rooms get a little cold and this is addressed as we were provided beds with electric blankets, but the single beds in the living rooms had no electric blankets so the kids were cold. The hot water also ran out.
Arrived after reception hours but, as we had announced it, the welcome of the staff was impecable. We were even received with a bottle of wine made by the owner (very good by the way)! The premises very unusual but absolutely amazing. Probably the only thing to watch out for (nothing can be done about it) is the localization as the place is on the outskirts of Hermanus and I think, without a guiding system, we would have had a lot of trouble finding it (it is on the main road but it can be missed relatively easily). We do have to point out though that if you’re looking for a friendly place, very family compatible, this is a place not to miss!!
