My wife and I came to the busy island of Itsukujima to see the beautiful Buddhist Temples and Shinto Shrines here, and to spend a night at the charming boutique hotel Kikunoya offers a very nice Onsen, delicious meals and spacious Japanese style rooms. It is a very enjoyable experience to visit and stay here!
Unfortunately Hotel Kikunoya was our least favorite hotel in Japan. While that being said there are not many options on Miyajima Island. Some positives are the free breakfast in the morning which we were not expecting as well as the complementary foot bath outside (kind of fun after a day of walking). The location was about a 10 minute walk from the ferry across all major attractions. The hotel was extremely close to our morning hike up to Mt. Misen which was awesome. As always you get wonderful and friendly staff in Japan.
The negatives are simply in the room, while spacious just felt very dated, unclean and uncomfortable. The bed was small for two and lumpy. No private shower or bathtub which is fine until you release the only place to clean yourself is the public onsen bath (not really ideal). I've been to many hotels with public bathrooms and showers however this was odd to me.
The breakfast was good hitting and missing on some components. Overall it wasn't awful by any standards just not really close to some of our other stays. Also a bit pricey for what you get.
My wife and I were warmly welcome by the reception staff on duty. We were early for the check-in, staff kept our bags so that we could continue to explore the parks. When we return in the evening, bags were kept nicely in our room. The onsen was awesome. Breakfast was on time and the meal was awesome too. Special mention to the hotel staff who speaks Mandarin, that was really helpful as we can't speak jappanese. We had an enjoyable stay, certainly would love to be back again.

The hotel was lovely as was the onsen
Was disappointed that there was no forewarnings that everything closes at 5.30 so dinner should be had either early or preordered at the hotel otherwise it is a 10-15min walk to the nearest restaurant and only a handful are open
Otherwise was pleased with the stay
Our room was BIG with big twin beds and about 55-inch TV was amazing. They gave free red bean cake which was nice and location was perfect. What let us down was the smell of smoke as our room was opposite the smoking room and can hear people walk in and out. I found it strange that we had to give our key to reception before going out?
I liked that they provided free breakfast which was pleasant - you can choose western or Japanese style.
Really enjoyed my time at the hotel - not much to do on the island at night so they had an array of DVD’s to choose from, and the onsen was perfectly lovely - I really enjoyed that they have an outdoor bath as it was not so hot and I could relax in the sunshine. The Japanese breakfast was interesting but tasty, and the staff were delightful and courteous. All amenities were really good, and I slept very well and comfortably. We arrived just after a major typhoon but the hotel had helped me navigate the storm via email to catch all trains and was really nice to have then pick us up from the ferry terminal upon arrival. I would absolutely stay there again if I find my way back to Miyajima
Beautiful, well-appointed hotel in Miyajima within walking distance to everything! The only thing I wish I'd known before I went is that the on-site onsen is strictly no tattoos. I have a full sleeve, and so I wasn't able to enjoy it until after it had closed to other guests... meaning I couldn't use it until 11 PM. It's expected for onsen to not allow tattoos, but I was surprised since this one is in a hotel. Just something to keep in mind if you're heavily tattooed. Otherwise it was a fantastic, comfortable stay!
The hotel went out of their way to make our stay wonderful. They picked up our luggage from the ferry station and dropped it back off when we caught the ferry home. The onsen was awesome after a long plane flight. The breakfast was perfect. The outdoor bar/foot soak is so peaceful. I would definitely stay here again.
A small walk from the ferry terminal and up a hill behind the temple but the hotel is lovely. The staff were very helpful at check in and explained the room and facilities along with places to eat.
The room very comfortable except could have done with an extra chair.
The Japanese breakfast was delicious.
Spectacular hotel, tucked away from the hustle-and-bustle. Delicious traditional breakfast, and a classic onsen that was exactly what I was hoping for!
Stayed here with a friend one night during a 2 week trip around Japan. Overall, the venue is quite nice and the staff is courteous and helpful. While they speak mostly Japanese, it seems that there is staff aptly suited to address any questions or concerns in other languages.
An indoor/outdoor public bath is available during the morning and in the evening. And complimentary breakfast is also provided. The room is very clean and has a mini-fridge and hot/cold water.
Nice hotel. About 5 mins walk from the shrine. Excellent service. Were picked up from the station and luggage delivered to the station as we walked back to the station after check out. Tried the all Japanese dinner in the evening at the hotel, Quite an experience for people who don’t like seafood! Requested English breakfast next morning.
