Centrally located amid many Northern Arizona treasures of Culture, History, Geology, and Nature.

Joseph City, Northern Arizona's oldest nonnative city, settled in 1876. Your Base Camp For Adventure is awaiting you!

Explore Wild-West history in Holbrook on Bucket of Blood Street. Stand on a corner in Winslow, AZ next to a Flatbed Ford! Marvel at Petrified trees in Petrified Forest NP, lose yourself in the beauty of a Painted Desert Sunset, or explore a local favorite, the "Cracks"!!!

Location, Location, Location! Adventure in every direction! Spin the compass needle and start your day's adventure! Our comfortable, clean and well-equipped nest will serve as the perfect launchpad for the making of memories that will last a lifetime. Modern and outfitted with everything that you need for a restful night in preparation for your next day's adventure. We are child, infant and pet friendly. We provide many extras to assist in the care of infants, children & pets.

Please take note that Google incorrectly lists all Joseph City addresses as being in “Holbrook”. This is due to the fact that Joseph City is not incorporated so Google incorrectly identifies us as a Holbrook address. GPS guidance will deliver you to the correct location, you will just note that you are actually in Joseph City and not Holbrook.

You will have the entire apartment as your private sanctuary for a restful nights sleep, snacks, or meals you choose to prepare in the well-outfitted kitchen, or just relaxing with the remote control surfing the channels on the 4K smart TVs. Directly across the street is our grassy City Park where you can enjoy a covered picnic table while grilling some burgers and hot dogs on the provided charcoal grills, while the kids play tag with lots of room to run.

My work schedule as a locomotive engineer may preclude my physical presence to assist with questions regarding the many adventures that surround our peaceful little town, but I can receive text messages 24/7 and will respond as soon as I am able. If I am available, I can assist with more in-depth assistance regarding local attractions, directions, and advice.

A note on our location... Joseph City is not Incorporated and as such Google does not recognize it as a city. Google will show the written address to be in the City of Holbrook, the nearest incorporated city. The address however is in Joseph City, and when entered in Google maps you will be guided to Joseph City and the correct address.

If you are visiting with pets please note that the grounds around the perimeter of the parking area may have some natural stickers and thorns that may prove painful to your pets feet if they are allowed to walk about freely in these areas. For a more enjoyable and pain free experience for your pet please utilize the grass of the pet friendly City Park directly across the street from the apartment. Please ensure that all pet waste is picked up and properly disposed of. Thanks!

Joseph City is a peaceful and quiet little town of about 1,500 residents and is Arizona's oldest non-native city and a refuge from the hubbub of our larger, younger, and more chaotic sibling cities. Joseph City was settled in 1876 by colonists who were members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This band of 73 pioneers was led by Captain William C. Allen. They traveled to the Little Colorado River basin of Arizona seeking farmland and water that would support their families. Joseph City was one of four Little Colorado River colonies. The other colonies were Brigham City, Sunset, and Obed. Joseph City is the only surviving colony remaining.

The hardest trial for the new colonists was trying to get water for their crops. This meant that they had to try to tame the Little Colorado River. This was difficult due to the flooding season that would destroy dams along the river. The first dam was built in 1876, shortly after the colonists arrived in the area. For the next 18 years, the colonists built ten more dams. The eleventh dam was built in 1894. This dam lasted for 29 years. In 1923, the eleventh dam was destroyed and the colonists were forced to build a new dam. This dam still currently stands and directs water to the inhabitants still in the city. Joseph City stands as an emerald jewell in Arizona's high desert of the Colorado Plateau. Irrigation water provided by the Little Colorado River and modern wells feed a townwide network of irrigation ditches that provide water to residents yards and many remaining fields of various crops grown by local farming families. Many with family roots that they trace to the original 73 pioneers that tamed this small parcel of Arizona's wild badlands of the 1800s.

No stoplights, light traffic, a low crime rate, and a relaxed atmosphere are hallmarks of our little town. We have amazing Pizza at Mr. G's on Thursday, Friday and Saturday afternoons and evenings. Esther's Diner serves a great selection of American classics and the nearby cities of Winslow and Holbrook host many great restaurants, diners, and bistro's in addition to a Super Wal Mart in Winslow and Safeway's in both Holbrook and Winslow where supplies for your fridge, cooler and other needs can be procured. Loves Travel Center in Joseph City has a Subway and Chesters Chicken, convenience store, and gas to fuel your adventures across this wild and beautiful land!

Off-street unassigned parking is available and free. There are no public transportation systems that serve our town. Most adventures are accessible by the family car and there are a few other great adventure sites that can be accessed with 4x4 capable vehicles.

Cozy and quaint
This place is centrally located to all of the major sites: Petrified forest. Meteor Crater, Walnut Canyon, and Flagstaff. Apartment was stocked with all our needs, especially the tea selections, kudoz. There were plenty of in house activities when the weather did not coincide with our plans, i.e books, games and tv.

Great stay! Small space.
We really enjoyed our stay, and had zero issues! One thing to be aware of is that it’s a small space for the number of beds available. We made it work with no problems, but you might want to be aware. Kelly was helpful and had a great option for us. Would stay again!

This VRBO property fit our needs
We stayed in Kelly's VRBO apartment in Joseph City for three nights. It is split level with the bedrooms and bathroom upstairs and the kitchen, breakfast table, and living room downstairs. The downstairs is mostly below ground so not a lot of windows and the kitchen window looked out on an enclosure with apartments across the way. The rooms are on the smaller side, but certainly comfortable for a small group. The apartment is located directly across from a nice park with a large grass area and picnic tables. There are trains that pass by, but the noise wasn't disruptive. The apartment was well stocked with lots of pots and pans, cutlery, teas and coffee, spices, olive oil, paper goods, etc. Similarly, the bathroom was well stocked with shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, and pretty nice towels. Kelly is a really good host. He responded to our emails quickly, provided food for breakfasts, and left all sorts of books and games. He also did a good job decorating the apartment in a ‘Route 66’ theme. Being truthful here, if you are looking for an upscale residence, this isn’t it, but it is one of the nicest lodgings you will find in Joseph City. That said, Kelly’s apartment was clean, functional, relatively inexpensive, and located only about a 30 minute drive from the Petrified Forest and Painted Desert which were our main focus, so, all in all, we were pleased with the accommodations.

Good value, location just okay
It doesn't look like much from the outside but the interior is a very nice apartment that mostly worked great for our family. The remote-control AC units, however, were not working in any way we could figure out. We had attempted to contact the owner via vrbo ahead of time and not heard back, although we did not try the listed phone number which we would have had it been hotter those few days. Also, it's worth knowing that although there are two restaurants in town, neither was open any of the days we were there, in part due to staffing shortages. So if staying here, assume you'll be eating in Holbrook or plan to cook (the kitchen is pretty well-appointed).

Perfect home base for our adventures in Petrified Forest
Kelly was a phenomenal host and communicated within minutes both times I had a question. The home was very clean and came equipped with full breakfast- oatmeal, waffles, pancakes and smoothies! That was so appreciated! We loved being able to use the washer/dryer before heading out for our next stop. The home also had various Disney books and games which our girls loved. Neighborhood felt safe too. Would highly recommend this VRBO and would gladly stay here again. Thanks Kelly!

Joseph City Stay
There were 4 of us staying at this property. We enjoyed our stay! It was a convenient place to stay close to the Petrified Forest and DoBells Ranch. The kitchen had everything we needed except for a frying pan. It was well stocked. It was great to have the washing machine and dryer. We had fun playing Arizona trivia and the canvas art 9f the area was beautiful. The books available were informative and interesting. Check in time is 5:00 and it would have been nicer to check in earlier for us. We couldn’t get in any earlier because there were people staying there ahead of us and I guess it takes that long to get it cleaned. The one thing that was could have improved was we did not get the Wi-Fi code and it was not written down anywhere. We were unable to get email or information for about three hours after our arrival. I had to go outside to email our host. All of this could have been avoided if it was written down somewhere. Our host apologized and told us that we were suppose to get it from Vrbo. Otherwise our stay was great!

Wonderful home base
We loved our stay in Joseph City. The unit was perfect for our family of four while we toured around the area: Rock Art Canyon Ranch, Petrified Forest, Clear Creek Reservoir (awesome swimming and rock jumping), Meteor Crater, lava tube, etc. A large selection of breakfast items is provided--such a great amenity and one we have never seen in a rental. There was something for everyone in our picky family. The beds were comfy, the AC was fantastic, multiple TVs, laundry, games, books, tissue boxes in every room (little touches like this throughout), and beautiful art and quotes and books and fun surprises throughout. Kelly was super responsive to questions. Neighborhood was quiet and nice for morning walks. We chose Joseph City over Flagstaff for the quiet and the small town experience and the perfect location and it did not disappoint.

Rundown Neighborhood
We did not stay at the apartment, when we drove into the neighborhood it was very unkempt and dirty and when we approached the actual apartment there were several men sitting in the doorway and standing outside. We did not feel safe and notified the owner. He was nice but offered no recourse other than we should not feel unsafe and should go on to the apartment. We got a hotel room for our time there, as my gut instinct was not to return to this apartment. I lost the money, cleaming fee etc.

Although it was only 2 bedrooms, there was plenty of room for our family to spread out and sleep. The beds were comfortable! It was really nice to be able to watch TV downstairs together in the living room and also in the bedrooms. We loved being able to use the washer/dryer, and the bonus was that laundry detergent was provided! Breakfast was provided in the form of frozen foods (Jimmy Dean sandwiches, smoothie mix, breakfast burritos), as well as Pop Tarts, granola bars, etc. They really thought of everything, offering all kinds of comfort items you'd find at home: dog treats/dog food for any furry friends, Pack-n-Play for babies baby spoons/high chair, little things like that. There were plenty of towels and blankets. The nearest Walmart is 30 minutes away, so make sure to stop there along the way if you need anything. A Love's is a few minutes away.

We could not have found a better place to stay in this area!
Finding a vacation rental in this remote area was rare and such an upgrade over Motels in Holbrook or Winslow and a better price, and this one had everything and more that we were looking for. Clean, cozy, everything worked great, and the attention to details of anything and everything was above and beyond what we could have wished for. Comfortable beds, washer and dryer, dishwasher, 3 tvs that all worked great, good wifi, VERY well stocked kitchen, great and friendly host. Close to petrified forest, and other attractions. If we could have given a higher rating than 5 stars, we would have.
