Quiet place to get away!
This place was absolutely fabulous! You can add dinner to your stay, and their breakfast is like none you'll ever have in the U.S. Truly an amazing experience!

Nice Ryokan out of Matsumoto City Centre
Firstly, this Ryokan is far from the City Centre! You'll need to take a Bus or Private Taxi to the Ryokan. For the convenience of future travellers, the bus journey is 340 yen per pax, on line 31. You should alight at the terminus station before it looks back. For your convenience, the bus stop number to alight is 8. After figuring out your transport, Izumiya Zenbe is merely a 2-minute walk from the bus stop. The staff was polite and friendly, largely Japanese speaking with some basic English communication. The breakfast was excellent and we will highly recommend you to try it if you are staying in a Ryokan for the first time. Unfortunately, the outdoor onsen was closed for repair and renovations, but this was compensated by keeping the indoor onsen open for 24 hours. There is a nearby public sento around which has a semi-open air onsen for those who are craving an open air bath. However given that renovations and repair works were almost complete, this problem will probably be irrelevant to future travellers. For those who would like a private bath, it can be booked for 3000 yen. The private bath coes with both indoor and outdoor onsen; we highly recommend this private bath. Overall this is a place to go to if you are looking for some peace and quietness during your trip and I will highly recommend this place for all travellers heading to Matsumoto.

Picturesque garden view from room and hot spring
We had pretty good stay at this hotel. The room we reserved had an individual hot spring bath as per wife’s request. From this hot spring bath tub you can see small Japanese garden (lots of ferns) beside sliding doors of our room. Supper was Japanese style as we expected. I tired a soba boodle, I should have ordered more than one serving as it was real good. As for breakfast, as per my wife’s requirement, she needed gluten free breakfast. They are relatively good at accommodating her needs.

Clean and very enjoyable Japanese experience
Very nice hotel and baths. Friendly staff who spoke just enough English to understand. Clean and quiet. Really enjoyed our stay and wish we had stayed an extra night to fully enjoy it (stayed one night only). Con: a little bit far from center of town but accessible by bus. Worth it.

Not in town, but great
If you want traditional, this is it. A $20 cab out of town, incredible meals, men's & women's onsen baths. Mats on floors, kind owners. Real Japan here.

Traditional Ryokan with friendly owners
A well maintained, traditional Japanese Ryokan - house slippers, tatami mats, yukatas, communal onsen baths etc. The owners were very gracious and the Japanese breakfast was a delight; a dozen different and delicate dishes to sample.

The hotel grounds and the onsen are very nice, worth the 20-30 minute bus ride from downtown Matsumoto. The food was really great, so fun to try the traditional fancy Japanese meal. The room itself, however, was pretty dated and smelled quite stale, possibly like old smoke despite being a nonsomking room. A little overpriced given the condition of the room but the staff was very friendly and the meals added a lot of value.

Matsumoto great stop, will come back
The stay at the hotel was superb. My wife and I traveled to Matsumoto on our motorcycles from Sagamihara for a full day of riding and site seeing. Beautiful day, but full day so having the right relaxing place to spend the night is important. The Izumiya Zenbe was perfect for us. Easy to find, easy to park is always a great start! The staff was waiting for us at checkin and the process was very easy. We were shown the rooms, the baths and the other area if the hotel. Our room was very comfortable, foutons were already out as we had arrived near 6. The hot tea was delicious. For dinner, we headed out and discovered a superb small sushi restaurant 5 minutes away! After dinner we enjoyed the baths, the outside baths were very nice. The location is quiet, the reading room a very nice spot as well. The hotel also had very good free wifi in the room. In the morning, quick bath and then an exceptional breakfast. The fresh made and served Japanese omelette was tops. It was a great stay.

Fantastic traditional style Japanese inn
This is a fantastic little hotel for anyone hoping to stay at a traditional Japanese inn. The room was comfortable, the baths (both indoors and outdoors) were relaxing, breakfast was delicious, and the staff were all friendly and helpful. I would gladly stay here again.

Great Place for a Visit to Matsumoto Castle
From the delicious and plentiful meals of local foods to the variety of public baths, we had a wonderful and relaxing ryokan experience at Izumiya Zenbe. The staff is wonderful in making you feel welcome and responding to any needs you may have. The outdoor foot bath, separate baths for men and women, and the reservable (at no cost) family bath, were great places to kick back after walking around Matsumoto all day. They also have a 24-hour shower and public bath available in the middle of the facility. Though its a bit older, it is nice for those that do not fit the ryokan's schedule for opening and closing times of other baths. There are set meal times (8 am for breakfast and 6 pm for dinner) for dining in the main building. Though you are in the same room as other guests, the experience is personalized, even down to different menus depending on the amount of nights that you are staying. The place itself feels like a maze at times, but an English map provided at check-in helped us to find our way around. If you do not have a car, you will need to get a taxi to and from the town of Matsumoto as it is about a 10 minute drive away. Matsumoto town though is easily walkable once you arrive there. Would definitely return to this quaint inn on the edge of town!

Real Japanese style room & real hot spring
This nostalgic, maze-like inn is built on the slope, suggesting that the hot spring is real. The open-air spa was great. As they have the (clean) source place, you can drink the water of the hot spring for free. I bottled it every morning. They also have a private bath tub for the family use, apparently.

Castle Town Stay: Izumiya Zenbei
We wanted a ryokan near Matsumoto Castle, and while the distance is a bit far at 4km and you would need a car or good map to find this property, it's worth it. Outstanding food with explanations of its choice and origins, nice baths outside - inside a bit average, while no discernible neighborhood to visit. Okay for families as well as couples; When you're there, you're there for duration and it's a fine and memorable stay.

A very Japanese experience.
This ryokan is 5km's from the railway, which makes it very quiet, but not accessible with suitcases, taxi's are plentiful at the station and cost abt 2200Y. The beds are traditional rolled out mats, and are more comfortable than they look. The onsen (hot springs) are great, but be warned, you should read up on etiquette before entering. There is separate male and female tubs, indoor and outdoor. The food here is amazing and is of the highest quality and is served in generous quantity. There is no menu and numerous small courses that you must try. Soba noodles are made on premises and are unbelievable (slurping is considered good manners). The staff are great, friendly and English, while broken, is enough to resolve any issue. While traditional, Wifi is fitted and of reasonable speed. A traditional ryokan is a must do adventure in Japan.
