A Big, Big Mistake
I rent from VRBO at least once/year and this was the first time ever that I really had a bad experience. I ended up not even staying at the property and going to a hotel. Upon arrival, we were greeted by two rather nice young owners, however as soon as they told us that "If anyone asks who you are, you must say that you are friends of the family", we became concerned. We guessed that they are renting a property (apartment - this was later confirmed) that cannot be sub-rented. Worse, as we looked through the unit, it was apparently the owner's primary residence, right up till the point we arrived. All bedroom drawers, and storage throughout were full of their clothing, and other belongings leaving us no space, particularly in the bedroom for us to empty our suitcase. Kitchen was full of partially consumed food items. There was inadequate bathroom supplies (towels/washcloths/etc) and no door on the bathroom. The unit appeared to be under renovation as outlet/switch covers were missing, and flooring was only partly complete. The location was not somewhere you could safely walk to a grocery store, etc (as they told us). The worst part of this experience was that I tried to communicate with the owner after leaving ... 30 minutes after arrival, offering to split the cost, assume 50% of the responsibility - even though we wouldn't stay there, but he chose not to communicate with me at all. After several attempts with no response, I've opened a complaint with VRBO/HomeAway and started the dispute process with my credit card company. Unfortunately, just a terrible experience. Sorry owners - I tried many times to communicate and resolve this ... without having to write a review, complain, etc.
