Off-Grid Renovated tour bus Adventure!

Above the clouds, on the slopes of Mauna Loa the Lava Bus has come to rest on the Lava Land Homestead. 100% Off-Grid, this fully renovated former tour bus will delight adventurous travellers looking to experience the star-gazing and "other-wordly" experiences of upper Ocean View. Coffee Lovers will enjoy grinding their own Ka'u coffee, perfect with local honey to sip at sunrise. Have a BBQ or small fire to stay warm while you enjoy the epic sunsets.

The space:
The bus features a memory foam mattress with
sheets and duvet, a dining table, chess board table, loveseat and kitchen. We include Hawaiian coffee and local honey along with fresh eggs from our chickens.
3.person bed is a 2" floor sleeping mat with sleeping bag and pillow.

The bus has a hot water shower with fresh towels and wash clothes and a compost toilet, with simple instructions for use.

Life on the volcano is always an adventure and the weather can add to the excitement, bring a few warm clothes and sturdy shoes. There is a propane heater if needed.

Please note: This is a remote location, some cell phones may struggle to get service. There is no wifi. Lava can be difficult to walk on; this adventure is not recommended for people with limited mobility.

Guest access
You are invited to walk around the homestead gardens or explore the 2+ acres of lava, but watch out, there are many immature plants! Our property is very young so many areas are still being developed.

Toss your leftovers to the chickens, Turkeys like fresh greens and rabbits too- plus carrots or fruits and veggies!

Roosters like to welcome the day around 6 am.
Other things to note:
You do NOT need a 4x4 vehicle. The road is paved the the way.

Exactly as stated
Expectations were met. The property was wonderful, exactly as stated on the site. Owners are responsive and the place was immaculate. We were extremely pleased to find fresh coffee beans and a grinder along with fresh eggs from their chickens. We stayed only one night but I would recommend two nights to fully enjoy your stay.

Love the Lava Bus!
We had a wonderful stay at Lavaland in the Lava bus. The bus was comfortable, clean, warm, and had everything we needed for our two-night stay. We loved the star-filled skies, outdoor shower, delicious honey and eggs, and the lava landscape. The owners are welcoming and kind, and they gave us a tour of the unique property. We hope to return soon!

Amazing and Cool
My girlfriend and I wanted to adventure the southern part of the island and needed a private and peaceful place to stay. The Lava Bus had everything a regular house does plus a very comfortable bed and amazing scenery. We wanted to use the fire pit and our super friendly host brought down some wood for us right away! Looking forward to our next stay at the magical Lava Bus! Mahalo Kitty!

Unusual and special
We were making a multi-day road trip around the Big Island and needed a place to stay after a couple of days in Volcanoes NP. We chose the Lava Bus because it was such a unique property. We were so happy we did! It is a bit of a drive to get to any services (around 20 minutes to gas/groceries) but it was an amazing location for seeing the stars at night and enjoying peace and quiet. It felt very remote, but at the same time the bus itself was so well-appointed that it felt somehow luxurious. The outdoor restroom was very clean and comfortable, the outdoor shower has plenty of hot water, and the interior of the bus is beautiful with lots of nice touches. We cooked our dinner in the kitchenette and played some chess and generally had a very peaceful, special experience. Thank you Kristen for hosting!
