Good evening. Let me start by saying in my 45 years of life I have NEVER given a review on a hotel stay but there was no way I can allow what happened to my children and I happen to someone else. I paid in advance for a room for one night (Saturday Nov 2nd) as my family was attending a religious ceremony on Sunday in Richmond. We live in Portsmouth Virginia. I noticed check in was at 3pm. We didn’t attempt to check in until 5pm on Saturday. I was told by the gentleman at the desk my room wasn’t ready. About 20 mins later while we waited with our luggage he went and checked and it still wasn’t ready. I asked when it would be he said he didn’t know and when I asked to speak with management I was told they weren’t available until Monday. PLEASE NOTE- at this time I was NOT told by him that if I wasn’t on site when my room was ready it would be given to someone else even though I HAD ALREADY PAID FOR THE ROOM and CHECKED IN. Needless to say my children and I go and eat dinner and when I return I am told that my room was given to someone else. When I asked how that was possible since I had previously checked in and paid for the room in advance he said it was first come first serve. That is abysmal service to receive and he pretty much offered me and my children a left over room. I want a refund in full for what I paid to stay at this location as well as the name and number of the GM so I can personally speak to someone about this matter immediately.

Older property kind of on the fringe of downtown. But we felt safe, the hotel was clean, quiet, and comfortable. Everything I expected. A generous breakfast buffet in the morning with several options. The staff was friendly and very helpful.

This Holiday Inn Express was good for us as we visited our son at VCU again. It was easy to get to and the parking was on site and convenient. I appreciated the security measure of needing a key to get to the floors where the rooms were. My only complaint was that the pillows on the bed were so soft and flimsy - my neck still hurts.

I cannot believe the wonderful experience we had at a "budget" hotel. When arriving on the property, we were greeted by the kindest desk clerk, Jason. Check-in was fast and easy. Our rooms were clean and spacious. The room was a little too warm at the start, but we were able to get the air conditioning working to cool it down. The area around the hotel can be noisy on Friday nights, but it wasn't much of the hotel's fault as there seemed to be some kind of party down the street. Breakfast was great and every single person we passed that worked for the hotel was extremely friendly and helpful. Any time we come to Richmond, we're definitely staying at the Holiday Express downtown.

The stay was below average, unfortunately. The other reviews are correct about this property. The rooms are poorly cleaned and even the common areas are dirty. The housekeeping and cleaning staff need to step it up on this property. The sheets are stained which is gross to sleep on. The other staff is average but professional. Also, the fire alarm went off at 5 am just to cement how below-average our stay was.
