Good location, average hostel.
It's a fairly typical hostel but most the people staying there seem to be the employees, so I wouldn't recommend it for meeting other travelers (unless maybe if your Portuguese is good). The area is pretty good and feels safe to walk around at night.

Very nice people!
I had an amazing time! Was treated very nicely by every member of the staff. The hostel is small and the spaces are a little narrow, but overall a very good stay.

Uncomfortable hostel close to the beach
Cockroachs, WWII like bunk beds, 3 broken bathrooms....do I have to say anything else? The location is great and the staff is ok, but the concept of comfort is inexistent. You can't sit in your bed because it is too short. There are 3 beds in each bunk. The rooms are small. The stairs are thin. The smell of the rooms and of the "clean" sheets is disgusting. I bought a spray and sprayed everything. I have stayed in other hostels everywhere and I can surely say that this is the most uncomfortable I have ever been to.

Almost a family fun place to stay
The staff is awesome...ALL the receptionists, Rodrigo, Daniel, Oswald, ans Manuela. AND, the daytime and evenings housekeeper and cook assistant, Elis and Regina. They both go out of their way to help in all ways they can, even though their English is limited. Hostel is direct easy walk to Copacabana Beach. Road of hostel seems one of most secure roads around Copacabana (your family can be assured that your home will be safe)...24 hour guard with guard.

El Misti life, Rio home away from home
The staff is awesome. Making you immediately feel as a new friend to them. Manuela is a wonderfully lively after noon receptionist, with nice singing and dancing and good music choices to keep hostel lobby a good place to meet people. And she's always enjoyable when you can think of excuses to ask her for things. The staff is all very attentive. Rodrigo getting in early to help everyone start the day, and give a fun education of Brazilian life. Daniel comes at different shifts, and also always welcomed all very well, and can give full spectrum of local life

Hostel that is home away from home, w new freinds
Amazing if you come for entertainment with people, and want excellent value for the price. The Staff is a great mix to make you feel really at home. With a bossy mom that comes in the mornings. Great Receptionists to wake to, and help throughout the day (Rodrigo and Daniel), and always make great conversation, and teach you all about being Brazilian and living in Rio. Oswald is a wonderfully nice, night receptionist, who also, is just such a pleasure to deal with. The one female receptionist, is a pleasure, and often gives some nice bits of entertainment, when speaking with her. ... El Misti here, is for people looking for others to go out with, usually have someone to go to beach with (so you can keep an eye on eachother's things, at beach where even dirty shirt and flip flops will be taken). The road is super secured. ... the whole place seems to get cleaned from top to bottom, repeatedly in the day. ... the cleaning/extra tasks staff - is also a real delight to have around. The boss, Elise is a wonderful hard worker, smiling and thorough, and helpful. And the newest member, Regina, is a sweet, hard working girl, who is EXTREMELY patient, if you try to speak with her, and gives the best opportunity to speak and converse in portuguese for your first times. There is music playing all day on the first floor, but things quiet down at 10 pm. Also - note that there is NO computer station as advertised on hotels.com, but staff allows you to use their computer.

Friendly, fun hostel
Hostel life often runs the risk of being impersonal and uncomfortable. You will not feel either of those things at El Misti Rooms. The staff is absolutely amazing, ready and able to answer every question you have. More importantly than that, they don't act like working there is a job - everyone enjoys helping you out and making you feel welcome in Rio. As for the rooms, I stayed in a 6 bed dorm for a week and it was fantastic. Met lots of great travelers, and the hostel (bathrooms, rooms, lounge area, etc.) was cleaned daily. There is the option to have dinner at the hostel after a long day of exploring, and breakfast is included. Don't hesitate - book this place now!

Great staff, AWESOME chef!!!
My first two week stay in a hostel, and other than a few maintenance issues that were dealt with pretty quickly, my stay was enjoyable. Best part by far was the staff. Especially the cook. He made some amazing dishes. He even made us poutine on Canada Day. :) Only a few blocks to Copacabana beach and all the transit that takes you all over the city. Scheduled parties and nightclubs, music venues, and even a boat party.

Decent stay for a great price
The room was quite crowded, it was 3 high bunk beds, total of 9 beds in a very small room. Although even with the tight corridors, the staff was absolutely amazing. I would highly recommend because the staff was great! This is a social hostel, lots of activities if that is what you're interested- good stay for a great price.

Go to El Misti :)
I had an amazing time at El Misti Rooms, it was my first time staying at a hostel. Rio was an amazing trip thanks to the room. The only thing that could have improved was the wifi, it would come and go. The reception staff was really nice and helpful, the maintence staff was of great service they kept the place clean!

Good location but bad condition
Very good location, air conditioner and free breakfast with such a low price. There are at least three bathroom, so don't worry about that. Free map, and you can also join some tour here. However, the room is too small for nine people, and some lockers under the bed are broken. Old facility, a small bed and noisy fans. At night, there are so noisy because they play music in the lobby(after 11:30pm)!! And some people come back so late, talk so noisy at night. I guess the staff should stop them.(Actually, this hostel set a quiet time after 10pm but it is totally useless.)

I had a fantastic stay. The staff are instant friends always ready to help. The other guests are great, food and tours good too. They make a real effort to ensure you're having a good time. Its a clean, well organised hostel and Ive stayed in a lot! I would stay there again for sure. Thank you El Misti!

good but crowded
good staff here welcomed me and helped me with my bags to the very top floor of rooms (lots of stairs). not much room for bags in 9 dorm rooms. air con didn't seem to be put on at 11pm as it was supposed to and no one wanted to scale the stairs to ask for it. standard hostel breakfast. the main thing was it was very crowded and felt a bit claustophrobic at times.
