So close to Vatican

What a beautiful hotel, and just outside Vatican City. We were accommodation only so can't comment on food or restaurant but the dining area looked beautiful. We were here during a heatwave so it was hot but there is plenty of seating throughout the communal areas of the large medieval building where it was cooler.

Live like a monk but pay like a king!

The initial impression from the exterior may seem impressive but closer scrutiny reveals the flaws. The reception staff attitude varied from superficial to downright rude. The interior of the hotel retains the old features of the monastery but then so do the furnishings. The corridors are long, tatty and, at times, dirty. Our "suite" consisted of a single room containing a double bed and a single bed, an old creaky wooden wardrobe with three coat hangers, and a prehistoric TV perched on an equally prehistoric minibar. The working and seating area consisted of a wooden table about the size of a large food tray and an old wooden chair with a stained and torn cushion. All of the furnishings were old wooden objects presumably picked up from a boot fair or garage sale. Nothing was old enough to be considered antique and the impression we received was "tatty and chipped". One small window looked on to the main road that leads to St Peter's Square which is cobbled and so the vibrations and noise from the traffic made for a fitful night's sleep. The only modern fittings in the room were three table lamps and one standard lamp which were a stark contrast to the wooden furnishings. And of course, those that actually functioned (3 of 4) were fitted with bulbs so weak that they have the paradoxical effect of making the room appear darker! The bathroom was stark, poorly equipped, mouldy and flooded completely whenever the shower was used. Breakfast was passable but at 15euros a head we preferred to drink our coffee tainted morning tea elsewhere after the first two mornings. Were there any good points? Well the restaurant is in a lovely fresco ceilinged room looking on to a quiet courtyard. Did we eat there? Well no because of the rude staff. And so we can make no comment as to the quality of the food but if it reflects the breakfast then it would have been impressively plain. The position is good for reaching The Vatican but quite a trek to the other interesting areas of both Ancient and Modern Rome. Overall impression? An Italian Fawlty Towers without the British Humour. Why did we choose it? I mistook it for somewhere I had stayed 25 years previously. Did we complain at the time? Yes. I speak Italian fluently and we politely and discreetly made our concerns clear. Did they do anything? Yes. They made us feel very bad about voicing our opinions. Would we recommend it? No way!! There are many more hotels with charm and better facilities in Rome for a similar or better price. Anything positive? One of the cleaning ladies was charming. Our recommendation: Stay elsewhere and pass by when you visit the Vatican but just stroll in and take a peak at the frescoed vaulted ceiling of the restaurant. Don't worry about being accosted by the reception staff as they will be too occupied by their text messages or the internet or probably not even present!! NM. Italy Perfect!!!

Location - Location - Location!!! This hotel is perfect! I highly recommend it. It is steps from the Vatican and surrounded by historic places to visit. We walked everywhere (even to the coliseum). Great shopping and restaurants - cheap! Loved it. We will always return here when we come to Rome. Thanks Hotel Columbus

Fabulous location

Fabulous location, historical atmosphere, brilliant for a quick city break. Resturant was overpriced for the standard of food. Bathroom was a squeeze but room was spotless and a lovely size. Would stay here again.

Great Hotel, Central To Everything!!!

Brilliant experience at this hotel, the hotel could not be any more central, when we looked out our window we actually could see st peters basillica! All the open top busses stopped across the road from the hotel for tours and the airport bus dropped us less than 5 minutes from the street

Location, location, location

Excellent location for sight seeing buses, restaurants, Vatican, the river trips and, if reasonably good walkers, then the rest of the main Rome 'must see' places. A bit noisy at night with a large air conditioning unit outside the building somewhere in the courtyard or on the roof starting up quite a number of times throughout the night. Friday night was very noisy with a local disco or club booming until 4am. Other's comments about the carpets concernerned us prior but when one sees the colour of the roads in the heat it is not surprising that ome of it treads into the rooms. Our room was rather cell like but was fairly well furnished. Quite surprised that we had to pay for wi-fi connection. Breakfast ourside on the quadrangle was lovely apart from the pigeons that would fly onto tables if left unattended and they would walk on cutlery on the place set vacant tables before being used. Having said all of this in general we were pleased with many aspects of the hotel and would consider it again for a future visit as there was nothing to which we greatly objected.

surprise

This hotel right in front of St Peter square has an excellent location. However the air con did not work and it was unbearable for this hot month of July. Unless the air con is fixed I would not recommend this hotel.
