Fully refurbished in 2021, this former jail dating back to the 1700s also has plenty of history within its walls. Sleeping up to five guests across two bedrooms, The Old Jail Barber’s Shop is ideal for families or groups of friends looking for a coastal retreat or a countryside escape in North Yorkshire.
The Space:
This newly refurbished two storey house is a gorgeous little getaway by the sea.
On entering the property and to the right you have a cosy bedroom. The first bedroom features light grey walls and original exposed wooden beams. The bunk bed features a double on the bottom and a single on the top, both of which are dressed with crisp white linen. The chest of drawers provide storage for your belongings.
You’ll also find an ensuite in this bedroom. This is a modern style shower room fitted with a shower, WC and basin. Large tiles cover the walls and floor, and the room is finished off with a wall hung mirror cabinet and silver fittings.
Head to the living room and you’ll find a homely space featuring a grey corner sofa, a wall-mounted TV and hardwood floors. Overhead you have a skylight window and spotlights which create a bright and airy feel. Enjoy an evening in front of the TV or make plans for your day ahead in these gorgeous, stylish surroundings.
Sharing the space is the beautiful and bright kitchen and dining area. The modern style, high shine cabinets and worktops brings a real sense of class to the room. Fully equipped with everything you should need for a short break you can cook up a feast here.
Take the stairs to the first floor where you have the second bedroom.
This bedroom features a king size bed and has a tranquil feel to it. The space features bedside and drawers, a flat screen TV and a bathtub. A separate ensuite shower room is also available in the second bedroom. This cosy and relaxing space is the perfect retreat after a busy day by the coast.
Head outside and you’ll find an enclosed rear yard. This area has a private feel to it and boasts a patio dining and seating area.
The original building was once a jail for the Londesbrough Estate in the 1700s and was used when Seamer was a popular trading destination between Scarborough and York with its eleven inns.
Guest Access:
Guests have access to the full property. The keys to The Old Jail Barber’s Shop are accessed via a secure key safe and full details will be provided shortly before your arrival date.
Private on-site parking is available for one vehicle. Free on-street parking is also available nearby on a first come, first served basis.
One well-behaved dog is welcome to stay at The Old Jail Barber’s Shop per reservation.
The Neighborhood:
The village of Seamer is right on the edge of Scarborough, just a short 15-minute drive from the town centre. The Mayfield pub is a very short walk away from the property. Ideal for families, the pub shows Sky Sports and has a large beer garden, serves meals seven days a week, a large indoor soft play for kids and it's also dog friendly. The award winning Seamer Fisheries can also be found a short distance away from The Old Jail Barber's Shop.
In Seamer, you'll also find a large convenience store which is open daily from 7am until 9pm.
Packed with seaside charm, you’ll find plenty of pubs, restaurants and cafes to discover as well as arcades and ice cream parlours in Scarborough.
There are a number of beaches for you to choose from. The popular South Bay is a sun trap and close to the hustle and bustle of the town centre. North Bay has been accredited with Blue Flag status meaning it’s one of the best beaches in Europe! Cayton Bay is the quietest of the three and boasts a sweeping bay with a rural feel. Lastly Cornelian Bay is the remotest and hardest to get to but it’s a hidden gem and often empty.
Ideal for all weathers, there are lots of indoor attractions in Scarborough for the whole family. Head to Sea Life Sanctuary to see seals, penguins, sharks, turtles and more or Scarborough Castle to explore its 3000 year history. If it’s outdoor fun you’re looking for, The Open Air Theatre is where you can see amazing bands, singers and comedians. There is also the Sky Trail Adventure and Peasholm Park nearby.
Getting Around:
The Old Jail Barber’s Shop is within short driving distance of all that Scarborough has to offer and within 45 minutes’ drive time of Whitby and Bridlington.
Seamer Train Station is a 15-minute walk away from The Old Jail Barber’s and has routes to Bridlington, York, Leeds, Hull, Sheffield, Manchester and Liverpool.
There are a couple of bus routes throughout Seamer. Hop on the 843 route for direct access into Scarborough, as well as to Malton, York and Leeds.
