Maritime History Meets Modern Comfort at the Carriage House in Old Mystic, CT!

Image your whimsical hideout featuring 4 artful, nautically themed ensuite private rooms on the main floor and a charming 2BR apt above. Near the head of the Mystic River, the Carriage House is your perfect quiet spot to relax from the bustle~ just 3 miles from downtown Mystic's attractions. Whether it's a couple's retreat, a wedding party, or a friends' meet-up, we can tailor your visit to ensure an unforgettable experience for you and your group!

Hospitality as sweet as apple pie!

The Carriage House, once an annex to the Old Mystic Inn, uniquely offers four individual private guest rooms with private baths and entrances on the first floor with a separate exterior entrance to the 2nd-floor 2BR apartment. Guests in your group staying in the 1st-floor private rooms will need to walk outside under the covered roof to access the 2BR apartment above to use the kitchen, dining area, and living room.

This configuration is unique for groups as it allows guests to stay in the private rooms on the first floor, which have private bathrooms and entrances, a little more autonomy and privacy.

We're delighted you found us and would love a moment to share what's special about this property!

A LITTLE HISTORY

The 1784 Denison Home, the antique red colonial on this property, built by John Denison, a prominent family name who settled in colonial Mystic was a hat maker by trade (or did he ever become a “mad hatter?”) The 1st floor of this home was most likely a hat store while he lived there.

Once upon a time, a gentleman named Vincent bought this special property and opened the Old Mystic Bookstore in the Denison Home. Vincent specialized in obscure 1st edition books and maritime maps~ housing over 20,000-30,000 pieces. The locals remember the bookstore well and said you could hardly move through the rooms as books and maps rambled along on all surfaces from top to bottom, but Vincent always knew where his books and maps were when a customer put in a request. You can still see his maps preserved in the Denison Home's front hallway to this day.

This wonderful property was renovated into a bed & breakfast, the Old Mystic Inn, and that's when the Carriage House, this listing, was built to accommodate additional guests traveling to Mystic. The Old Mystic Inn welcomed guests for 33 years until 2019, when Michael, chef and last innkeeper, served his last guests his famous scrumptious breakfast.

This dear property has much history and many stories to tell over its 250 years and is meant to continue to open its doors to visitors who desire to experience a piece of that history, too! If only walls had ears, imagine the stories they could recount. Perhaps you can listen and hear the walls whisper words of the past!

LOCATION

Located in the hamlet of Old Mystic at the head of the Mystic River, the Carriage House is just a 3-mile ride to the Mystic Seaport, shops, and restaurants. Enjoy seaport history and walk or bike on the scenic River Road just around the corner.

Haley's Way Playground and Field is just a hop, skip, and jump behind the property- a great place to bring the kids to play.

Quaint is an understatement and central to everything! Launch your Kayak a short distance away. There's an amazingly friendly post office across the street and an antique shop open Friday-Sunday, where you never know what treasure you will find. Our town is quiet at night and a great respite from the bustle of DT Mystic. If you are in town on a Sunday, you may even hear the sound of Church bells as you rise for your morning coffee.

Do you desire a day to just relax after traveling? Make a to-go lunch, grab some takeout and one of our blankets, and have lunch on our lawn under the big Maple trees.

If you enjoy walking, jogging, or biking, we have complimentary bikes available as part of your getaway, the scenic River Road is just around the corner across the little bridge. (Please note: bikes are seasonal and subject to availability)

Ready to go out and explore? Spend a day at the Mystic Seaport Museum and immerse yourself in maritime history. See the ships and buildings that inspired our room names at the Carriage House, the 1784 Denison Home, and Williams & Smith Cottage next door~ you need to board the Charles W. Morgan, the last whaleship left!

Spend a day exploring the Mystic Aquarium and make a date with one of the Beluga Whales.

Craving a beach day? Pack one of our beach bags and towels and head to a local beach or one of Rhode Island's beaches, easily accessible within a 15-minute drive.

Rent a kayak or paddleboard and spend time exploring Mystic from the Mystic River!

Venture out to one of the wineries or breweries for an afternoon sip and taste.

Do you crave a bit of nature during your Mystic stay? Walk one of the many scenic farms nearby.

During the fall months, you'll be a stone’s throw from BF Clyde’s Cider Mill, the oldest steam-powered cider mill in the country. This special mill draws crowds to see the steam engine in action, and taste the freshest apple cider and apple cider donuts, too!

Whether you need relaxation or activity, Mystic offers both!

LARGER GROUPS?

75th Birthday Celebration
A group of 13 high school friends and spouses chose this property to celebrate our 75th birthdays together - and what a great choice it was! Everything was just as described and more. Debbie is a terrific host, providing all kinds of extra, welcoming touches including an apple pie! The indoor and outdoor accommodations were perfect and provided both gathering and private spaces. In addition, Debbie gave us lots of good local recommendations for dining and activities. We would all be very happy to return to such a lovely spot.
