Conflicted. The location is great. Room was dirty in ways you don’t want a room to be dirty. There were parts missing in shower so I had to hold the wand to shower. Tub always nice.
Paid a lot of this room so didn’t feel the delivery of service matched that.
The food was pretty bad and the service was not great overall. Didn’t feel sanitary in how food and dishes around food handled.
Loved the area and the hotel staff did try but this place as others have said needs to do some work to improve.
The bathroom had a pretty funky smell that never went away, and it seemed that their answer was to put a tiny bag of potpourri next to the toilet, but it could have used a more thorough cleaning. Otherwise, a very nice and helpful staff, great free shuttle for local hikes, and decent breakfast and dinner. Quiet and lovely spot by the river where many people were enjoying the water.
This is a great traditional Japanese place to stay and located 15 min by shuttle or bus from Hongu shrine and world heritage center. It’s on the river and the staff is friendly, onsen inside and outside (during season) and access to hot springs river out the door. It’s traditional futon sleeping with in room Japanese bath. Plenty of space and welcoming service. All meals are scheduled if you are going to eat at the Inn. Food is wonderful and classic Japanese only.
Room was very comfortable and stylish. River Onsen was busy, but fun. They allowed tattoo's both inside and outside onsen. Service was amazing. Dinner service could have had some explanation of the food offered or a menu.
Front desk hospitaity was excellent but dining service was horrible. The service lady mistakenly received wrong service time order from front desk and repelled us from entering the dining hall. And when we ordered drinks and due to langauge barrier, she dropped the pen very rudely for us to fill in. Never experienced such hospitality in japan ever.
Wonderful stay in the amazing area of Wakayama Japan, land of Kumano Koda and waterfalls. We stayed at this ryokan for 3 nights and used as base for exploring the region. The facility was damaged by recent typhoon flooding and just reopened. The restoration was excellent; new flooring, paint, finishes. We had to ask if hotel was damaged! You would not have known. They are OPEN for guests. The service was excellent, meals spectacular. They have a local craft beer which i found to be very good before our usual saki. Service throughout stay was excellent in all aspects. There were enough English speaking staff to provide directions, transportation, etc. The inside and onside Olsen’s were nice, not large but never crowded. My favorite was the outside bath in the early morning. Wifi worked well, if you need it. Strongly recommend this ryokan for the region, you will not be disappointed. We arrived by car as we were going exploring the region. There is public transportation available, a bit more in the summer. Mostly buses. The hotel does provide free shuttle service to and from the World Heritage site little under 2 miles.
They were very welcoming and helpful even though we speak little Japanese. They helped us plan our day hike and even ensured the bus driver knew we were going to Koguchi so we didn't miss our stop. Food was yummy but it was difficult to know exactly what we were eating.
I stayed at this onsen with my husband and two teenagers during the hot and sticky month of July. Swimming in the river and relaxing in the natural, warm hot springs was pure joy after long days of hiking and sight seeing. This place has a peaceful aura and is one of the most relaxing experiences I have ever enjoyed. The hotel facilities are ageing a little and could be freshened up, the carpets in the room was quite dirty and the onsen baths in need of a good refresh. Having said that, the true magic of this place resides with the location, the beautiful river and the out of this world food! We really enjoyed it and would recommend it without hesitation.
We have enjoyed Kawayu Onsen Fujiya so much. The stay was so pleasant, the staff was very nice and helpful( though English wasn't their strength). The dinners for three nights were exceptional, a great variety of Japanese food and local produce. The lady serving dinner was so observant and dedicated to great service. The manager( the man in grey suit) even saw us off waiting for the bus with us and helping with luggage, he can speak some English. They helped us find the timetable for the boat trip and gave us a lift to save our waiting time for the bus. I would highly recommend this hotel and would definitely go back if I visit that area again.
The hotel looks abit old but is very clean and quiet. The staffs are very helpful too. They are able to make the vegetarian meals for my sister! You can also go to the open air onsen in the river just next to the hotel. The bus stop is just right in front of the hotel and you no need to drag your luggages .
This place was pretty expensive, but we booked because it was advertised as being close to Nachi Falls. In reality, it was over an hour and a half bus ride away, and in the middle of absolutely nowhere. Nobody spoke English at the hotel, and there was no bed in the room (this was probably my own fault- it was advertised as "Japanese Style"). The room was dirty and had spiders in it, and the lobby area looked like a crummy 80's motel. The river in front was beautiful, but it was virtually impossible to walk to any stores or restaurants because there were none in the area. The wifi also did not work.
Nice river view.
River Onsen only available in winter.
Limited dinner time slot available. I can only choose either 5:30 or 7:30 even I arrived at the hotel by 4pm. Suggest to reserve the dinner time before arrival.
Spent 1 night in Hotel Fujiya at Kawayu onsen. Nice secluded locality where a huge outdoor hot spring dug by the side of the river is the main attraction. Truly enjoyable experience to soak in its warm waters with the cold winter air in your face. The hotel was nice. A bit old but nice and clean. The room I got was newly renovated though, and had its own private onsen bath (but it came at a price). Only minor complaint was that the kaiseki dinner was a bit rushed.
