Extra Info:
Hotel Central Background

In 1931, the monumental Hotel Central was constructed opposite the station in Tilburg in Art Deco style by architect Casper Melchior Balthasar van den Beld. Before that time, the location housed the café-restaurant Albert Janssen.

During World War I, Theo van Doesburg was stationed as a sergeant-postman on the Regte Heide between Tilburg and the Belgian border. The café-restaurant of Albert Janssen served as a meeting place for Van Doesburg and his artistic friends who organized sensational Dadaist 'intimate soirées' there. It was also here that preliminary ideas were formulated for a new magazine (De Stijl) that would mark the start of the art movement De Stijl, founded in 1917 in Leiden. The outlines of this renewal movement were sketched in pencil at this location on Spoorlaan in Tilburg.

As a salute to the spirit of innovation at that time, during the renovation of Hotel Central in 2023, it was decided to leap historically and name each of the 21 rooms after an artist associated with De Stijl or a Dada artist.

In the person of Theo van Doesburg, who wrote Dadaist poems under the pseudonym I.K. Bonset, De Stijl and experimental and absurdist Dadaism come together. Both art movements, which were reactions to World War I and the new era that dawned with the 20th century, stood diametrically opposed to each other.

Each of the 21 rooms in Hotel Central has received unique wall coverings featuring specific accents and/or quotes from the respective artist, writer, or architect.

Room 21: Bart van der Leck Room (Utrecht, 1876 – Blaricum, 1958)
Bart van der Leck was a transdisciplinary artist who worked not only as a painter but also as an applied artist. He was an illustrator, book cover designer, and involved in interior design. He designed stained glass windows, fabrics and patterns, vases, tiles, plates, posters, carpets, and letters. He met like-minded individuals such as Theo van Doesburg and Piet Mondrian, and in 1917 he was invited by Van Doesburg to write for the new magazine De Stijl. Over the years, the Kröller-Müller Museum has managed to acquire a large collection of his work.

In room 21, several replicas of small tiles with geometric shapes in primary colors have been installed, the original versions of which are included in the collection of the Kröller-Müller Museum. The walls are colored blue and yellow, as seen in various characteristic paintings by him. His quote about square and triangle etc. in a frieze against the ceiling is based on the typeface designed by Van der Leck in 1941. The wall drawing is a free interpretation of this statement. Van der Leck developed his own color scheme, mainly using the primary colors red/yellow/blue, as well as gray on a white background. His entire palette consists of two types of gray, a very light pearl gray and a dark almost graphite gray, and the colors orange-red, sky blue, and a bright yellow.
