We stayed at this service apartment hotel with modest expectations, and for the most part, everything was fine. The location was convenient, the room was clean, and the amenities like the kitchenette and washing machine were a nice touch.
However, our experience soured at checkout. A breakfast charge was added to our room, which I immediately flagged as a mistake. The front desk staff, though, was quite reluctant to believe me. I was asked to explain three times, and eventually, I had to challenge him to show me the signature on the receipt. The “signature” he presented was clearly not mine, nor did it even resemble my name. To make matters worse, the name on the cheque wasn’t even mine.
Despite this, the staff member insisted that it was my room, and I found myself having to push further by asking him to compare the signature to my passport, which was on file. Only then did he grudgingly drop the issue, though it was clear he wasn’t happy about it.
This incident highlighted the passive-aggressive, robotic service typical in Japan, where problems are handled rigidly and without much initiative to solve them outside of protocol. The inability to acknowledge a simple mistake was frustrating, especially after spending a large sum at the hotel.
In the end, I was left feeling unnecessarily harassed over a $25 charge, which felt insulting after such a large expenditure.
