Characterful, spacious 3 bedroom cottage in the heart of the North York Moors

Whinchat Cottage is a delightful 200 year old stone built cottage in Castleton which is in the stunning North York Moors national park and has a Co-op, 2 pubs and a tea room. The cottage is roomy having originally been 2 cottages and at one time was Police House for the area and still retains the original police cell (which is now the boiler room) complete with the Victorian cell door.
The cottage is full of character and charm with and has been refurbished to a high standard and is extremely comfortable and cosy. Every care has been taken to ensure that this cottage has everything you might need for an enjoyable and relaxing break. Downstairs the living room is cosy with beamed ceilings and a log burning stove, there is a sunny and elegant dining room with hand painted furniture and a meticulously equipped kitchen. Outside is a courtyard patio with cottage garden flower beds which is delightfully sunny and sheltered in the summer. Upstairs sleeps 6 plus 1 small child and again every consideration for comfort has been taken. The the bedrooms are thickly carpeted, the mattresses are new and are excellent quality and all adult bed linen is 100% Egyptian cotton.
Castleton is an excellent location for exploring the beautiful North York Moors, it has more amenities than most of the moorland villages having a Co-op and 2 pubs. The walking from here is superb and the Esk Valley Walk starts at Castleton. Days out to local attractions such as Whitby, The Moors Centre and the North York Moors steam railway are all within a 20 minute drive. Whinchat Cottage is at the east end of the village, close to the village amenities with views of The Howe from the front door and south facing windows.

Comfortable cottage and so convenient
We fell in love with the cottage from the time we first entered - to find everything needed to make tea and biscuits, and a vase of flowers in the kitchen (and the unique feature - the cell door and barred windows on the old police cell!) The cottage had plenty of space and was very comfortable and well fitted - comfortable beds and linen, plenty of towels, well equipped kitchen and everything nice and clean. The heating system was of a type I had not previously encoutered, burning wood pellets, but the comprehensive instructions in the house guide made this easy to use and it worked perfectly. Add to this an ideal location for exploring the moors (and the local pubs and co-op), and this is a cottage I would love to return to another year.

Perfect!
A clean, comfortable, warm and cosy place to stay - felt like home from home Perfectly located for exploring the area. Kitchen very well-equipped, has everything you could possibly need. Beds incredibly comfortable with beautiful linen. Hosts incredibly helpful and responded immediately to any queries. Even the residents of Castleton couldn't have been more friendly and helpful! We would definitely stay here again. Thank you.

Fantastic holiday
We had a great week staying in this beautiful, characterful cottage. Brilliant location for touring the North Yorkshire Moors. We sampled many local pubs for meals and they were all great also had the most delicious butty from a shop called The Greedy Pig in Whitby, well worth searching out and visiting if you’re in the area. There is a small shop almost opposite the cottage called, Off The Scale which sells various quirky things and utterly delicious home baked cakes and savouries, a definite must visit while you’re there. The cottage was clean, well equipped with comfy furniture and especially comfortable mattresses. Fantastic stay we will definitely return.

Lovely!
Lovely cottage. Very comfortable, quirky and cosy. The owners were great and offered prompt advice when we had a query abiut the heating system. Castleton is beautiful and has some lovely walks. The food at the local pub was delicious and staff very friendly. We recommend the Sunday lunch. The train to Whitby was a bargain and went through glorious countryside. We've never seen so many pheasants and rabbits! Staithes was lovely too. Sadly the weather was mostly cold and wet - very unseasonable for last week in April. We will be back - with warmer clothes! One minor thing a bigger, smarter tv would have been welcome during the inclement weather. Thank you for a lovely break.

Warm cottage in a cold December
The cottage is really warm and comfortable, very well equipped, and located on the main street of the village so handy for pub and the few shops. It has comfortable beds and sofa and logburners for those feeling the chill. The area is beautiful and the coast is a short drive away. Walks from the village were not so plentiful being mainly on quiet roads. Overall recommended.

Castleton met all our expectations - a great cosy cottage with everything you would need.
The cottage was well maintained and had all we needed for a great stay. Perhaps it would have helped to know that not all phones can get a signal here, the village has no bus services so you have to have a car and 'feeding' the eco friendly heating is quite heavy work. But once you get used to being 'remote' it is wonderful being in the quiet beautiful north york moors.

This is the second time we have stayed in this property, and not surprised to say it is still good. Well equipped and clean, and Castleton is so central to many great places to visit. We will recommend to our children who are all walkers and of course we will be returning D and B

Fantastic cottage in a fantastic part of North Yorkshire
We had a brilliant stay, the cottage was extremely comfortable, with everything we needed. Beautiful courtyard full of flowers was a wonderful place for morning coffee, and after a long day of walking the moors or fossils finding on the coast we slept like logs in the comfortable beds!

Lovely place to stay
I stayed here with my family recently and had a lovely time. The house is charming, full of character, very comfortable beds, well maintained and had everything we needed. The village has a Co-op and tea rooms and the local pub has a very friendly welcome with a beautiful view from the beer garden. The house is in a great location, perfect for exploring the stunning countryside and only a short drive to Whitby, would definitely stay again.

Excellent choice of location and cottage
We have just returned from a weeks holiday at this beautiful quirky cottage. The cottage was equipped with all items needed and was like a home from home. We found some quiet beaches within 20 minutes drive which were thoroughly approved by us all with the added bonus of free parking and toilets..ideal location to explore all normal tourist areas including Runswick Bay, Staithes, Whitby and the North Yorkshire Moors. The local village coop has basic supplies which is an added bonus along with the local pub across the road from it which does fantastic meals reasonably priced, however early booking is essential. Great communication from Pippa the owner and the one issue we had was promptly dealt with, would highly recommend this dwelling and would definitely book again.

Great location, wonderful property .
We would like to thank all for our wonderful stay at Castleton. The cottage was above and beyond what we expected. Spacious and clean, very well equipped. Furnished well, such lovely decor, felt like a real treat. The enclosed courtyard garden just perfect in the sun most of the time. We couldn’t have asked for more. The village was lovely and quiet, local pubs for meals both great, tea room warm and welcoming. Local co-op within 2 mins walk. We will defiantly be back . Thank you x

Ideal Base for Exploring
Stayed here for a week and found it the ideal location to explore the North Yorkshire Moors. The cottage is a real home from home and every effort is made to make guests feel comfortable especially under the Covid restrictions. The cottage is quirky with lovely features and very comfortable beds. The village has a Co-op, two pubs, a tea room and deli all which we tried with great success. Saltburn is worth visiting along with Staithes and Runswick Bay. Whitby is very busy especially at weekends but fish & chips at Trenchers is a must. The food at The Downe Arms in Castleton is amazing with very large portions but they supply you with a box to take leftovers home. We also joined in the Quiz which they have on a Thursday night which was fun. Plenty to do in the area and the scenery and Yorshire villages are stunning. Highly recommend this cottage and thank you to the owners Pippa & Stephen for making our stay so comfortable.

Could not have wanted more
We stayed in October, the cottage was superb as was the location. We are keen walkers and the little Tea room walks book that was left in the cottage became the basis for all our exploring without the need of a car. The cottage was cosy and well equipped with the friendly local pub, Co-op and deli nearby we had everything we needed. Looking forward to being able to return again although must stop recommending it to all our friends so there is availability!

Magical Moor Holiday
The house is outstanding in its atmosphere and equipment. Every room is decorated to perfection to make You feel comfortable in a very high standard. Even the courtyard is so inviting with all the flowers and a nice sitting place for lots of meals in the sun and cuppas. The landlady Pippa was more than friendly and helpful in every way. The Yorkshire Moor countryside around is just magic. This will definitely be our next summer holiday home again.
