What you can expect

Benefit from a sunrise or later morning transfer service from Funchal or Caniço to embark on your self-guided hike of Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo.

After pickup from your accommodation, drive to Pico Do Arieiro before sunrise or in the later morning where the hike starts. Your driver will provide a briefing with all the information needed about the route and the timings. You can walk on your own or join other people in the group.

Walk from Pico Do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo, the highest mountain on Madeira Island with 1862 metres of altitude. You will have 5 hours to complete the hike, which is plenty of time even for slow hikers.

Admire breathtaking views along the trail and feel as if you are walking above the clouds. On the challenging path, you will find a few tunnel walks and the famous stairway to heaven.

Finally, arrive at Achada Do Teixeira, the ending point of the hike. Your driver will be waiting there to bring you back to your accommodation.

We enjoyed every second! The day before the hike, we received a message letting us know that PR1 was partially closed. They gave us two options: either do just the open section of PR1, combine it with PR3, or cancel and get a refund. We went for the longer hike option, which did not disappoint! Pickup was prompt, and we were given clear instructions about the day ahead. Once we arrived at the sunrise spot, our guide explained where the start and end points were, where pickup is, what to do if we got lost, along with other important info. One of the girls in the group wasn’t feeling well, and he kindly came to pick her up and drop her back as well. After the hike, on the way back, we even overheard him giving some great tips on where to go and eat in Funchal, which was a lovely bonus! Sadly, we never got his name, but we do highly recommend this if you’re thinking about doing the sunrise hike! A shuttle option provides more flexibility and information than other options.

This was transportation to and from the hike and nothing more. However, instructions were clear, pick up was exactly on time, and the driver was very friendly and helpful.

It was amazing! Radko was very helpful, he made sure I was okay. We were given the instructions before the hike and I also received the information and tips a day before which was very helpful. Would definitely recommend.

Great experience, but unfortunetely we couldn't get to the top Pico Ruivo because the trail was damaged. 😢

The pre event instructions were thorough and clear. Whilst PR1 is closed, it was good they had come up with an alternative. We really enjoyed the walk down the mountain through the valley, especially with the donkeys at the end! Radko came to pick us up perfectly on time and was fun, knowledgeable and welcoming. I really like the accomodation pick up offered on this tour, it saved the anxiety of locating a pick up point.

Well organised, punctual transportation. Perhaps explain the route inside the vehicle if it's very windy outside as struggled to hear what was said. But overall an amazing experience

We took the alternative route and we found it amazing, we‘ve got a good description from A to Z and the path was easy to walk. Always be careful to not leave the PR3 otherwise you woldn‘t hit the collection point at the agreed time.

It was a nice trip. Unfortunately only 1.4 km of the route is open. I didnt really like the alternative hike because there are too many steps and it is quite boring hike. The guide was nice and friendly.
