Our premium snorkel tour is the adventure of a lifetime! We make it a point to in depth explore two of the world’s most incredible marine life habitats. On your way out to Kealakekua Bay (Captain Cook’s Monument), our captain will give a rich backstory to the area, the fascinating ecological facts of the reefs, and the cultural impact that the bay has had in Hawaiian history as it has come into contact with westerners.
Kealakekua Bay was the first place of extensive contact between Native Hawaiians and western explorers. This troubled relationship has laid ground to many aspects of Hawaiian life going into the 19th century until the present. While the human-history of this landmark may be a point of contention, there is no denying that the life beneath the ocean surface is one of beauty.
Like Kealakekua Bay, Honaunau Bay is a sacred place in relation to Hawaiian history. This place of reverence was said to be where defeated warriors, and civilians found refuge in ancient Hawaiian times. The most common spot to lay anchor and snorkel in the bay is fondly known as “Two Step Beach”. Contrary to popular belief, there are marked off, sacred areas within the bay where it is prohibited to snorkel; we will be adhering to guidelines while still delivering on the most exciting drop off for our guests. There are lush reefs within the bay that do not venture into these restricted areas; these reefs are known to have a plethora of tropical fish who both live and swim around throughout the day.
