"Historic Riverfront Estate—5 min to Salida, 20 to Monarch, Raft In/Out Beach!"

NO pets | KIDS OVER 13 WELCOME

Peaceful and serene, this private riverfront estate sleeps 12! The Poor Farm is a newly renovated, historic farmhouse perched on a bluff along the Arkansas River.

The home features 5 bedrooms, 6 bathrooms, a well-stocked kitchen, mini arcade, library, cedar sauna, and a private beach with access to Gold Medal Fishing Waters. The large Victorian-style rooms with vaulted ceilings offer plenty of space for friends and families to spread out. The beach is just a 50-second walk down the hill. Located 5 minutes from downtown Salida and 22 minutes from Monarch Ski Resort.

We're only 2 miles from downtown Salida, which is bikeable and walkable in the summer via a riverside path that leads into town. Taxi services are also available if needed.

Hosts live in a separate adjacent home and keep to themselves.

All bedrooms are on the second floor, accessible by a staircase with 22 steps. Each room has a private bathroom and individual A/C units in the summer. Organic detergents and cleaners are used for a healthy, minimally scented environment.

The spacious kitchen includes everything you need for cooking, with a 6-burner stovetop, 2 ovens, dishwasher, coffee maker, microwave, water filter, pellet ice maker, and a large fridge/freezer. We also provide organic coffee and tea.

This beautiful, peaceful location on the river is a perfect home base for your adventures in the Arkansas Valley. Rent rafts locally and use our private beach for rafting in or out. Enjoy a picnic by the river, bike to town, or relax in the outdoor seating area with a glass of wine and a crackling fire. The sunsets are breathtaking, and the dark, quiet nights offer stunning views of the stars. If you're an early riser, watch the sunrise from our cedar sauna.

The outdoor space features a large seating area with a wood-burning Chiminea fire pit, and a seating area on the river beach.

The Poor Farm was built in 1892 by Chaffee County as a home for the destitute, who worked the land in exchange for room and board. It originally covered over 100 acres, much of which is now the Mt. Ouray State Wildlife Area. Listed on the National Historic Register, it’s a cherished piece of Chaffee County history. Hosts spent three years lovingly renovating this property and are excited to share it with you for lasting memories.

A note to the nit-picky: As a riverfront property in the country, minimal encounters with bugs in the summer are normal. If that bothers you, this may not be the right booking for you. Across and down the river is a rarely-used, 100% non-toxic sand and gravel company, often mistaken for an active mine. It’s located near the historic Salida Smelter Tower, which has been inactive since 1920 and is open for public visits.

Important: Your reservation is only for the number of guests booked. No additional guests or visitors are allowed on the property. The exterior of the property is under surveillance for your safety and ours.

Beautiful Riverside Stay
So nice to be out in the countryside, overlooking the Arkansas River and surrounded by the mountains, and still enjoy the hustle and bustle of downtown Salida, so close by! This house is beautifully kept and exquisitely decorated with antiques, and each room has it's own bathroom. The host is so friendly and helpful. Our stay here could not have been more perfect! Outstanding!
We came for a 50th bday friends trip. The guys wanted to fish and the girls wanted to hang out. This place fit the bill. Unfortunately the river was abnormally high and running too fast to fish but there was a small "lake" down the street that the guys really enjoyed. Salida is an awesome mountain town, great shops, good walking town, and very friendly people. It was wonderful having a bathroom in every bedroom, although we found that the downstair shower was our favorite. Be advised that only the upstairs bedrooms have AC (window units), it can get warm downstairs even with the windows open but as the sun starts going down the temp cools off inside as well. The house had everything we needed for cooking meals. Shae, the host, was exceptional and communicated often and easily. We loved the Poor Farm, inside and out!

Beautiful home
This home was perfect for our family with each bedroom having a private bath on 2nd floor & the living area & kitchen is perfectly located on 1st floor. The kitchen was stocked with dishes so we could cook meals. We loved the "sonic ice machine" & use of a dishwasher. When we had a question the owners were fast to respond. Perfect location and property.

A great escape
Beautifully decorated & maintained historical home in an epic Colorado setting. Our group had the best long weekend spending time together at the Poor Farm, walking around by the river, dining & shopping in Salida, and visiting the nearby hot springs and ghost town. The fire pit and game room are just the icing on the cake!

Amazing location for a group of friends
This is the perfect spot for a quiet getaway with a group of friends. 5 bedrooms with their own en suite full bathrooms is AMAZING. The kitchen is big, well-equipped, and open to the bright, large dining room. Loads of space to spread out across two living rooms. All beautifully decorated and chic. The location on the river is nice but it isn't walkable to anything, if that's important to you. We ended up scrapping our plans to go anywhere because we had so much food and such a lovely place to hang out! Hosts definitely have this down to a science. Nice toiletries, coffee, and a pellet ice maker (!!!) are just some of the perks of staying here. They're also very communicative and kind. I will definitely recommend this property and come back for future weekends away!

Bachelor Weekend
We had a fantastic weekend. 6 friends and I stayed at the property for three nights, cooked great food, and took advantage of all the mountain activities. The house was incredible and amazing that each bedroom had its own spacious bathroom! It is about 3 miles outside of downtown Salida but that's kind of what we were looking for. Communication with Shae was so easy and she responded to any questions very quickly. Highly recommend this property.

Utter Perfection
A group of dear, long term friends and I gathered for 3 nights at the Poor Farm and it was better than we could have ever imagined. The space suited us perfectly... we cooked family meals and cleaned dishes together in the beautiful kitchen, played games and read books (and tried to create life stories for the historical portraits) in the sitting room(s), had coffee and silly tarot readings in the dining room, belly laughs by the fire, full moon and lightning viewings from the front porch, cold plunges in the river, warm ups in the sauna, and the ability to get away from each other and have our own space to sleep in the gorgeous upstairs bedrooms :) It was such a special time for those of us who have moved away or don't get to see each other as often as we used to in the ideal setting. So grateful to Shae and Brady for the work they put into this space for others to enjoy!! I hope we can return every year... or just live there permanently :)

Haute Spot
A few friends get together every couple of years. We're all big skiers and wanted to meet up in a beautiful, peaceful spot with accessibility to a ski hill. We love Salida, CO and the search started from there. I identified a few options, one close to Monarch Ski Resort, another in Poncha Springs and this. The prices varied, with this being on the higher end of our budget, but in hindsight it was the right call. As the ringleader, I made it clear that we're going "big". Meaning, you have your own room vs. crashing with your stinky, snoring buddy as was the case two years ago. The pictures do this place justice, but when we arrived it was even more magnificent. High ceilings, hardwoods, fully stocked kitchen, sauna and chiminea outside. TV and game room, several sitting areas and large kitchen table. The time we didn't spend at the mountain and hot springs, we intended to spend in Salida. But after sinking in to this incredible spot, we decided to lay low in our temporary palace. The hosts were super helpful and communicate well. We highly recommend this!
