Description and History:
174 A Saint Philip Street, Unit 3 - The John Bulow House
The land (lot 33) on which this remarkable building was constructed was acquired by John Jochim Bulow in 1834 from the Rowland Rugely (1734-1776) estate. Bulow, a prosperous merchant and planter, owned extensive real estate holdings on the peninsula and a plantation south of Charleston along Rantowles creek.
Constructed in 1922, this Victorian building, now known as 174 A, showcases exquisite ornate trim, expansive porches, bay windows, gabled standing seam roof, and exterior vibrant exterior color. The high ceilings and large windows allow ample natural light to flood the spacious interiors.
This is not a typical short-term rental; it is not a renovated dependency or a newly constructed unit in an old neighborhood, nor is it situated on a tiny lot in a questionable or remote area. The old hardwood floors, tall ceilings, original moldings, plasterwork, windows and doors exude a special warmth, character, and charm that that is very difficult to achieve in new construction. This is the real deal!
