Itinerary for a Week in Southern Utah
Day 1: Check into your reserved place, hit Walmart or Costco for food for the week. If you opted for Costco, maybe think about watching the sunset from Dixie Rock at Pioneer Park (Red Hills Parkway, St. George, Ut). Be sure to visit the Red Hills Desert Garden before sunset as well. You will pass it on your way into the parking lot, and this place is really cool because a lot of the plants are labeled which makes for a great introductory education to Southern Utah. I’d recommend a Café Rio (pork barbacoa salad) dinner before sunset, and a cement ice cream from Nielsen’s Custard after.
Day 2: Zion Narrows! We like to rent bikes on our way into the park We load them on the free Zion shuttles in groups of 2-3 and meet up again at the Temple of Sinawava. We park our bikes in the bike rack and hike to the Narrows (this is an easy walk on a mostly flat, paved 1-mile trail). Once the trail ends, we change into water shoes and hike as far as we can (usually 2 miles with kids on a warm day). I pack blow up water floats in my backpack for the kids and let them float down. This is a kids paradise, where they can climb rocks and splash water. Please note that you do not need a permit to hike up the Narrows from the Temple of Sinawava.
We ride down to the Zion Lodge and have lunch. After lunch, we continue down the road, and at Canyon Junction, we navigate onto the official bike path. Feel free to let the kids stop and play in the river. We end our ride at the Visitors Center near the Watchman Campground. Sometimes we do the ride down twice a day.
Day 3: Zion’s Angel Landing! I recommend doing this hike because the views are just breathtaking, and it is a Zion classic. This is best as a couple's date or for kids older than 12+. This hike is 5 miles roundtrip and starts at the Grotto Trailhead. Don’t leave Zion without going through the tunnel! Park your car off the side of the road and run up Checkerboard Mesa.
Day 4: Bryce Canyon National Park! Don’t miss the Hoodoos! You need to hike under them to really see what they are all about. My favorite trails are the Navajo Loop and Queen’s Garden Trail. You can see a lot from your car, so drive to the end of the road and back again. Be sure to spot the arches near Natural Bridge and Hole In The Rock Road.
Day 5: Explore Sand Hollow on a Maverick Side By Side! Ask the ranger to explain how to find the tunnel and drive through it and explore the area. We love the trails and the different rock formations. If you want to see Sand Hollow from the water, feel free to rent a boat for a day. Many people call Sand Hollow a mini Lake Powell because it has rocks you can jump off and just looks a lot like parts of Lake Powell.
Day 6: Grand Canyon, North Rim! The roads are small, so I recommend traveling both ways in daylight. There is a scenic lodge at the North Rim that has a great menu. The rocking chairs on the patio have spectacular views, and this is a place you could just sit for at least an hour.
Day 7: Snow Canyon & Tuacahn are local gems. One of my favorite Southern Utah hikes is the Lava Flow Trail at Snow Canyon State Park. I pack headlamps and glow sticks for my kids, and enjoy the geology along the way. The trail comes across an open lava tube with a natural staircase into an open cave. This hike is 2.5 miles roundtrip.
