Not for everyone's taste perhaps
Stayed in the penthouse suite. Last-minute booking, quite affordable and unique for this neighborhood -- but there are caveats. The penthouse is a large, open apartment-like space with sitting areas, a kitchen/dining area, two beds (king and double), and a bathroom with a tub. Very cool and unique space, much larger than you would get at newer corporate hotels for this price. I could have lived here for a week. It was quiet with no creaking or disturbance from other guests. The ambience especially in the evening is chill and dare I say romantic. There are a lot of stairs to get up there, so it may be challenging for the elderly or those with a ton of bags. The furniture and fixtures are functional but dated (this is what you sign up for when you stay at Tabard Inn imo). The bed was comfortable and I slept soundly. The shower was a bit awkward -- small space, water gets on the floor, and the hot water only lasted for about 5 minutes. I was shivering by the end. It was my first time staying at Tabard Inn, and I think it helps to look at it as an experience. Try to remind yourself that it is an "inn", not a "hotel" like a Marriott or Hyatt. If you have stayed at similar places (in Europe perhaps?) or bed & breakfasts without all the modern amenities, then you are more likely to appreciate your stay at Tabard Inn. I think the restaurant and bar is still the star, but I'm glad to have stayed here at least once in my life. It really is a unique and historical place.

It was like at a stately home of days gone by. Love the antique furniture and art all over the property. The staff were wonderful and warm.

For years I've wanted to stay at the Tabard. I have to say I was very disappointed. Our room was listed as having a queen bed, but it was only a full. The bathroom was so small that the shower was over the floor. The walls of the bathroom did not reach the ceiling, so there was no privacy. The hot water took forever to come out in the sink and shower and the shower was either way too hot or way too cold. We were unable to bathe. All of this for "only" $500 per night! The food in the restaurant, however, was outstanding.

They provided me a third floor walkup and I am 80 years old....plus no bell service for luggage or elevator. Was not real happy with that situation. Secondly, lights kept flickering in our room during stay and they finally went out and had to wait for correction. Dresser drawer was missing handles and had hard time getting them opened for use. No black out curtains plus curtain rod on main window fell off. We did enjoy the dining room and the food service employees in both the dining room and at the bar.

The location is great but my room was freezing, and that was despite turning the heater up to 80 degrees. My feet never warmed up and I slept for not even three hours. The bed comforter was very thin, and there were no extra blankets in the room.

Tabard Inn is unique, totally unlike the standard American hotel in decor and ambience. The beds were comfortable and the towels unusually soft and fluffy. The bathtub is long enough to lie down in. There is a restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The service for breakfast was excellent but the food was average. We wish we had understood that there isn't an elevator. We are in our 70s and on the fourth floor. We're active but it was a bit much.

Unique place...
It is a very, very old building. The front desk staff were great. However, if you have allergies this may not be the best choice. I ended up with a migraine an hour after arriving as im allergic to dust and such. Our room had an odd step up to the bathroom which was a hazard especially when waking during the night...not ideal for folks in their sixties. It was a unique one-night stay. The room was unique but wasnt exactly 😕 what i had envisioned. No television was odd. To get our room we walked through the restaurant. We did the off site parking as it was $24.00 less. That was a benefit as it was parking overnight until 5pm the next day.

The rooms are rustic with old furniture - I really like the decor. The bathrooms are more modern. Some mold staining on the shower grout, but so does my shower at home! The restaurant and bar within the Inn are wonderful -- really great outdoor seating in a patio area. Highly recommend staying here vs. the standard cookie-cutter hotels with their sterile atmospheres and Spartan furnishings.

Dangerous bath room!
The room I stayed in was a lawsuit waiting to happen. The bathroom consisted of a large clawfoot tub with a shower installed over it. There was no shower curtain, so water sprayed all over the bath area which was not a separate room from the bed. The tub was in a sunken tile enclosure that was almost a foot from a raised tile-covered area which also held the toilet. So, to step out of the tub onto a water covered platform a foot from the tub was scary. It was very slippery and there was only a terry cloth bath mat which was soaked. I nearly slipped and lost my balance, but there NO GRAB BARS. It is an extremely dangerous situation that could result in serious injury. I would not stay in that room again!
